Newbie here, neat site, lots of reading to do! Need a little help first(in order to read some of it)
System; 6 year old Windows XP setup. I have the Comcast/McAfee security deal updated and scanned to date. Using Internet Explorer.
Issue; When attempting to open a secondary window or follow a link which does so, the new window appears but is waiting endlessly for the incorrect website to display.
Steps taken; Cleared temp Internet files, etc. = waiting endlessly for blank website to appear. Disable McAfee pop-up blocker and reboot = no difference.
This issue seems to have occurred after a recent McAfee security update.

I searched MS help for issues and tried the recomendations to no avail. Ran sybot & adware to no avail.
Ruby, I can't follow your links with out copying them and inserting into the address bar first, hence the link thing.

try this ; open a new word document
copy and paste

then open the word document and click on the first link; see if that will allow you to get to that download?
also; if you ARE on XP will the computer allow you to access system restore to roll back to prior TO the recent update .......

That worked! Updated defs on a-squared and running a deep scan now. Looks like it will be several hours.
Appreciate the help, I'm out of work or I would just get a new machine instead of messing with this dinosor. 3 low threat cookies so far...

A-squared ended with the three low threat cookies. SuperAntiSpy came up with McAfee cookies. Still the same...

did you have a nosey in system restore yet? if your problems happened with a security update you may need to chug ON system restore to get you back to prior TO that update?
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial56.html shows you how TO access system restore and what to expect to find IN that section
have a nosey and see what YOU find>

I got a registry recoery box on start up today. "registry data had to be recovered ... use of log or alt copy" looks like my OS is corrupted. Will read the article and try. Thanks a bunch Ruby!
Edit; Forgot to mention I tried IE restore defaulte(repair), no go. Also tried starting in safe mode and same. Points even more twords registry corruption? What about these registry cleaners? sounds iffy to me

I do have that stuff somewhere but I see from the above I have to remove IE7 first and then go thru all that stuff. I have done similar in the past at work on older machines and it is quite tedious. Time to update machines. But hopefully this thread will help some one else in the future and again, much thanks.

Did you try running IE7 with no add-ons and seeing if you have the same problem? I have just had a similar problem I couldn't open a new tab in IE7 it just kept on freezing and then not responding, so I ran IE with no add-ons (which you can do by going to the Start menu->All programs->Accessories->System tools)and I found that it opened a new tab ok, so then I enabled each add-on one by one until I found the one causing the problem(Windows live toolbar).
