Just wanted to let everyone know that two new tutorials on Firefox have been written and are now viewable.

Switching from Internet Explorer to Firefox

Enhancing Firefox with Browser Extensions

Thanks for these. I bookmarked them so I can share with new Firefox users if problems are posted to other boards.

I will be updating the switch to firefox one this tuesday to reflect the actual installalation process.

Great.
As I remember, in order for Firefox to work properly, you also must install the JavaruntimeEnvironment (and probably Macromedia Flash Player). You might want to include these installation steps as well.
Thanks

You sure about the javaruntime? I just installed it on my mothers machine and had no problems. I am not going to include installing flash and shockware as I want this tutorial to focus entirely on the firefox itself.
jgweed
No, I am not sure. I remember having to install it for Mozilla 1.0, and when I installed a recent version of Firefox (since JRE was already installed) I did not go the process in a clean manner. Since both use Gecko, I assumed users would need it.
Regards and apologies all around,
John

"On Windows, Mozilla can be used with Sun's Java Runtime Environment (JRE). It can not be used with the Microsoft Java VM, as that can only be used with Internet Explorer. Also, versions of Sun's JRE older than 1.3.0_01 will not work."

Ok good info...i will update the tutorial to contain that info as well.

FYI

Now Mozilla has found it necessary to set up a security centre. I guess it is becoming too popular for hackers to dismiss. The link to the page is:

http://www.mozilla.org/security/

I really wish the folks would re-arramge their site towards a more user-friendly design.

John

You might take note of the fact that there is a new Java Runtime update out:

Java Download Page
You will have to register, so that link may re-direct you to another page if you aren't already registered. The download page has lots o' options, so look for this:

Java™ 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition 1.4.2_05

(I was kinda surprised, since I installed the "latest" version just a couple of weeks ago...the SE 1.4.2_04)

Here is information about "why the update"

Problem Need HELP:
Error Msg: JavaScript Application "Cannot download Applet" (using FireFox 1.0).

I have JRE 1.50 Installed and its working with IE.

On JRE Control Panel, when I Check 'Mozilla & Netscape' and Apply, it fails with Error Msg "Unable to Change Browser Settings", please check Mozilla or Netscape is properly installed.

I have only FireFox1.0 and NOT Mozilla or Netscape installed AND I don't see FireFox as one of the options in "Java Control Panel."

Please advise.

Thank You.

Grinler are those the same one we were talking about? PM...
They look good!

You may need to download the current version of JRE. I no problems running any Java Applet using Mozilla.
Cheers,
John
