I was trying to upgrade a computer from Windows 2000 to Windows XP. All seemed to go ok, but when I rebooted the computer it comes to a blue screen that tells me: STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF894D640 ....)

What have I done? How can I get my operating system back?

Thanks for your help.

you can try last known good configuration in safe mode but I would have done a clean install

upgrading W2k that's broken by software or got maleware problems will only leave you with a broken xp

I tried last know with no success. So I should just install again at the dos prompt?

I can get to an "A" prompt, but it doesn't recognize hard drive. When I tried to restart in safe mode, I keep getting the error message.

to do a clean install of windows xp you insert the install cd in your optical drive, then reboot, if it still fails to read the disk and start the clean install, then you will have to go into bios and set the cd drive to firsat boot devices

when I want a guide for something like this I google michael stevens and clean install

it's not what you know but knowing who knows what

I'll certainly try that. I did change the first boot in the bios, but got the same error message the first time. Then I formated a floppy and installed the msdos info. I was able to get to an "A" prompt, but it doesn't recognize the hard drive.

Thanks for your re-direction, I will try this and let you know.

there are certain raid pata onboard controllers and sata ones that require a floppy set of drivers and you have to press f6 when asked early in the setup screen
