Try looking in the Device Manager under Sound, video and game controllers, you will need to click on the box with the X inside of it to expand the tree. Look for anything with either a red or yellow marking, these will be errors or warnings. You can usually right click on these and go to properties to see what the problem is. It may be a driver issue.

Start> right click on My computer> Manage> Device Manager.

No harm meant...but you did check to see that the speakers are plugged into the green receptacle?

One thing you might want to try...remove the drivers for the sound controller in Device Manager...reboot and let XP install same again.

Some Laptops will let you disable the sound in the BIOS. You may want to have a look there I have had a couple Sonys with the option in the past.

OK...unfortunately, it's called by several names in Device Manager.

Do you see anything in Device Manager/Sound, Video, & Game Controllers...referencing "Yamaha"?

In any case, I think you should download/install this driver: http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-downl...739&os_id=6

I would remove all known Yamaha drivers/files...and then install the driver at the Sony website.
