I installed a virtualbox on my Vista. I tried running the Damn small linux but I always got the BSD.

Since DSl work on smaller RAm, i tried allocating 64MB of RAM and used the default video memory which i forgot.
I also use the ISO image.

Does anybody already tried making DSL work on Virtual box? Did i miss something?

Hey, I just downloaded DSL and virtualbox. DSL was the current version (not sure actually what version it was named current.iso) Virtualbox ver is 1.5.6. Booted just fine for me with the following settings> 64MB RAM, 2GB Fixed HD, and I also booted from the .iso No other setting were changed. I'm guessing it might be a problem with your hardware ... maybe your video card but I can't be sure. Is there any more info you can give us from any error messages? Have you used any other virtual software on your machine? VirtualPC, Virtual Server, VMWare? If you use more than one there could be conflicts.

I have a Toshiba Sattelite A205-S5815. AMD Turion 64 x 2 Dual Core TL 64 (2.0GHz), 894 of RAm and ATI Radeon X1200 Graphics.
I dont what is the error is, its just gone BSD. I tried to find it but I can't. But i noticed in the smalldamnlinux.vdi (my guest harddrive) it created another
.vdi file with a punctuation mark in the beginning. I dont know what it means.

I know my RAM is quite low but i tried running the virtualbox with 57% of the memory are already used by the system. The only applcation that is open is virtuaal box so that i could spare more RAm for virtualization.

I also downloaded the version 1.5.6 of virtual box and used dsl-3.4.10.iso.

I had only one, Virtualbox.

The following is info from another post on how to get he blue screen to stay up so you can get all the info: I am also going to download dsl-3.4.10.iso and see if i have different results.

Here's how to get the Blue Screen to stay so you can read the information on it:
Go to Start and type in "sysdm.cpl" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Click on the Advanced tab
Click on the Startup and Recovery Settings button
In the System Failure box, uncheck the box that says "Automatically restart"
Make a note of the location of the Dump file (you'll need it if the Blue Screen doesn't give enough information)
Click OK to exit the dialogs

The next time the computer crashes, it'll stop at the Blue Screen. There you'll be able to give us the exact error message and any file names associated with it. another question ... does dsl even get to the boot screen where you press enter or further? if it gets further can you see what it is loading when the computer fails? depending on if it is loading a driver that is or is not compatable with your system we might have found the problem.
something else to try maybe is to download the live ubuntu cd image or another linux distro and see if you have the same results.

Yes, i can still see the bootscreen. Then , when i hit enter. I just turn black. I just have to power off the laptop so that I can kill it.

Ubuntu? have you tried it.? I think it would need much RAM up to 125mb. Maybe , ill try this when I get back home.

Try downloading the "embedded" version which is designed for virtual environments.

I tried Mandriva yesterday but end up with no success.

Here is what ive seen in the bluescreen taken by my camera.
I can't upload the image taken from my camera...heheh...imageshack is filtered..hehhe



I haven't tried what kristopher's advice in determining the reason of crashing since i have no connection on the internet
at home. I forgot to copy the instruction.

I will also try the embedded dsl by AMAZING ANDREW's advice.

Hmmm... you may want to make sure you have the latest driver for your video card. Seems like the ATI driver you have is what's causing all the trouble.

And yes, x86 = 32 bit.

I see. Is their also a possibilty that the virtualbox is not supported by ATI or the other way around?

Other means to solve the problem?

interesting ... i had mass trouble getting linux to work correctly on my hp laptop which had an ati video card. eventually the problem was fixed in later vers but that would be interesting to find out for sure.

Hi.

Sorry for resurrecting this thread but I finally made my virtualbox work on my machine.

I adjusted the setting from the default Enable ACPI to Enable VT-x/AMD-V.




It works fine now. No more atikmdag.sys BSOD.
