Hi,
What's the best Hard Drive Manufacturer?
Could you tell me your favourite and also past and present experiences with their drives please?
Thanks

This has been discussed in the past, and except for a couple of real dogs back in the early days, any of the big name brands will perform equally well, and fail, at about the same ratio.
I tend to stick to Seagate, 4 at the moment, but that's just me.
Will be interested in other opinions.

I have a variety...Seagate. Samsung, IBM/Hitachi, Maxtor, et alia...but I tend to buy either Seagate or Samsung as a preference (if their prices are equal/near to those of Hitachi). No real reason, other than price, I suppose, and they seem to do the job for me.
I agree with comments made by Rowal5555, there is no best or worst...with the exception of certain batches which are fully exposed by bad press (and there is no predicting that). IBM drives periodically had such, but I've not seen that problem with Hitachi (since IBM sold their drive business).

I have had the most problems with Seagate. One where the Seagate
hard drive tools actually locked the drive and made it completely unusable.
I've had success with Maxtor, only one failure. They replaced it at no cost.
Western Digital is the champ of the bunch with not a single hiccup with any
of the ones i've used.
This of course is just my personal experience.

I like Western Digital very much, last month I received my new
Western Digital 750GB SATA Hard Drive for only $131, So far I have zero complaints. It's fast and inexpensive and also easy to install. I decided to go with a Western Digital since almost every Maxtor I've ever had eventually crashes. I would recommend this brand or a Seagate.

The one in here is a seagate. 0 problems in the year i've had it. Had a maxtor almost forever, like 7 years? that eventually did crash but a lifetime like that i'd say it was a pretty good drive.

I like Western Digital the best.
My first experience was back in the early 1990's - I deliberately bought a defective 200 mB drive (could afford one that worked) and RMA'd it with no problems.
Most recently I had a MyBook 500gB die slowly on me. W-D sent me another drive to transfer my stuff to, then took the bad one in on RMA (had to provide a credit card number to ensure I returned the bad drive).
I've only had one complete failure about 3 years ago - an 80 gB IDE model that was way, way out of the warranty.

So you're saying WD is the Walmart of the harddrive world? "we'll return anything"
All of the major manufacturers of hdds have had their share of failures, it happens. And all of the major brands are pretty much equal in quality, the only large difference at this time is in the warranties, at five years Seagate has the longest warranty.
