Anti-virus: AVG Free Edition- quite good- praised by many users online
Anti-Spyware: Super Anti-spyware (Excellent) AND Spybot Search & Destory
Firewall: Zone Alarm OR Comodo

Try the link that Budapest has recommended as I also suggest you take a look in there.

Also, I use:

Anti-Virus: AVG Anti-Virus (Free Edition)
Anti-Spyware: Spyware Terminator along with SpywareBlaster as-well as SUPERAntiSpyware
Anti-Rootkit (Optional): AVG Anti-Rootkit
Firewall: COMODO Firewall PRO

They work fine together, they don't use up valuable system resources and they get the job done efficiently. I can tell you that SUPERAntiSpyware is a great program as it has found Trojans that my other scanners didn't find. (SUPERAntiSpyware is known for picking up malware that many popular scanners don't.)

david.

My recommendations are:

Anti virus: Avast! Home Edition
Anti Spyware: Comodo BO Clean, Spybot S&D, Spyware Guard and Super Anti Spyware
Firewall: (I recommend for advanced users only) Comodo Firewall (or for the not so advanced user) ZoneAlarm Free
Anti rootkit (optional): AVG Anti Rootkit and F-Secure Backlight (DIRECT DOWNLOAD)

All of the recommendations so far are very good. What you will minimally need is:

1. One Anti-virus with real-time protection
2. A firewall (do not rely on the Windows firewall and turn it off upon installation)
3. At least two anti-spyware applications.
4. A browser alternative to IE.

John

As John said, a browser besides IE, I recommend using Mozilla Firefox. And, you may also want to try the No-Script add-on with it aswell for improved security.

Just keep in mind that malware is being created as I post this and that no protection is 100% foolproof.

David.
