It's been a while since I've been around.... but anyways...
Vista SP1 (for those who have been running Windows Update religiously, like myself) are not going to notice much of a difference in the way Windows Vista runs. You will in most cases notice file transfering from HDD to HDD or from one location on the HDD to another of the same HDD to be a bit speedier in initiation and termination after success.
For those who have been running the RC of SP1 are going to notice even smaller changes (like myself) who have been using RC1 since late December 07.
I look forward to what will come of SP1 and eventually SP2, which we all know will come.......

Lot's of users are reporting successful SP1 installations - so for most people the XP SP2 debacle is now ancient history. But a few people are having issues - particularly with reboot loops at step 3. It'll be interesting to see what's causing it.
I haven't seen any drastic performance improvements with it, and it'll take a while to see any reliability or security improvements - but all in all it seems to be a worthwhile update.
Some threads about the update 3 of 3 boot loop:

The fix of renaming pending.xml to something else seems to be the most popular.
Some will boot into Safe Mode to remove some offending updates
Others will use System Restore with limited success (recent restore points may not work, may have to go back several days).
This article says essentially the same thing (but gives a priority to the above suggestions):

I downloaded sp1 and now the printer is only printing blank pages. Also had multiple windows updates of files already downloaded in my add remove folder. I uninstalled then took the windows update again and I think that may be resolved. But can the printer problem be related to Sp1??
Edit: I reinstalled the printer firmware now everything is A OK

i nstalled it but im havng a problem. I was about to post in bleeping that the upgrade is successful when the screen just turn into blackscreen. Even a mouse pointer cant be seen.
I just bought this laptop 2 week ago and never experience this kind of problem.
I just backtrack evrything in my restore point.
Also i noticed that the RAM available as it is seen in Welcome center and dxdiag doesn't match anymore. Before the upgrade it is the same.
Please let me know if others has also encountered this.
Thanks.

I've installed Vista SP1 on both of my PCs (one is a notebook) and haven't had any problem.
They both have all the current hardware drivers which may have helped the installations go smoothly.

I have SP1 installed on my desktop and it went fine, and I have had no errors or problems at all. There have been a few performance boosts, and it is working great. If you haven't already I'd recomend downloading it.

Izzy,
. Vista can display a warning that activation is needed after SP1 is installed. You may have to reactivate after installing Vista Service Pack 1 if the installation updated hardware drivers in the process. This is documented in KB article 947519. Check out the KB article. It has links to other KB sites that may help you.

Hello,
Installed Vista SP-1 today with no problems. Took about 1 hour 20 minutes. One question, though. My computer is a HP Pavillion with, I believe, 2 gb hard drive. HP Total care advisor startup program always showed roughly 80% free space on C drive before the SP-1 install, now after the install it's showing 94% free space. Not knowing too much tecnical stuff about this, would the SP-1 install free up THAT much disc space?

Background: I'm running a new HP a6330f computer w/ 500 GB hard drive; which came with the Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit O/S.
I attempted installing the new Vista Service Pack One no less than 4 times to date; each ending with the same result: After installation finishes, it boots up exclusively in Safe Mode. The first two tries, I allowed automatic update for the install then, without success, I downloaded the stand-alone upgrade, and tried it that way. Same thing... forever Safe Mode. I then tried installing the Service Pack from Safe Mode; with the same result - forever Safe Mode. Each time, I've received a message that Vista Service Pack 1 was successfully installed, and a check of my computer information would confirm it. But I've had to go to restore system each time, because I remain in forever Safe Mode. I've attempted rebooting the computer, and tried selecting the "normal boot" option, and yet it continues to go straight to Safe Mode.
The research that I've done would suggest that it's probably a driver problem, but I've done a check for every conceivable driver I can think of, and I'm told in every case that my drivers are up-to-date.
I'm sorta/kinda at my wits end. I know I could just leave the O/S "as is", but since the computer's new, I'd like to stay current right out of the gate. Any insight, hints and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

At work we're not installing SP1 on any Vista machines yet. It's just too new, and it's not as all-encompassing as XP SP2 was - so we feel safe in holding off at least until mid-April before installing it on customer's systems.
That being said, the only major issue I've seen with it is the constant reboot when doing update 3 of 3 on a reboot.
The driver issue should be identified in your Problem Reports and Solutions applet in Control Panel (Classic View). Other places to locate more info are:
- Event Viewer - look for errors and warnings in the Windows Logs...System log files
- Reliability Monitor in the Performance Monitor
- go to Start and type in "perfmon /report" (without the quotes) and press Enter - this will yield a system report that may help
- Control Panel (Classic view)...Performance Information and Tools...Advanced tools...View Performance details in Event Log.
