...but can't seem to find a conclusive answer to this question:

Is it really necessary?

If I'm to understand correctly from what I've read, disabling it is ok...unless it causes other applications to not function properly.

IBM? Modem? Seems like I could do without, no?

If you do not use the modem, then disable it.
