Here is a little insite on folding at home.

How To Join..

What is Folding?

http://folding.stanford.edu/

Are you ready to Help Mankind and have a little Friendly Competition to keep it interesting?

1st, you need to download the client program.
Windows users should choose the Graphical Client or the ScreenSaver Client(2K or XP only)
Linux users should choose either of the 2 linux clients depending on the distro you're using (see notes on d/l page)

download here: http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/f...g/download.html

2nd, install the client, create a username, and put the team#(38444) in the appropriate box

that should be it...
here's the FAQ just in case it's not http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/faq.html

Tips And Tricks For Folding

1. Preparing Your Computer for Folding
a.) Disable Your Screen Saver, System Standby, and Hibernation.
b.) Get rid of spyware!
c.) Destroy all Viruses

2. Optimize Graphical Client Settings
a.) Uncheck "Logos Enabled"
b.) Slide Molecule Draw rate all the way to the left
c.) Select "Folding@Home" for client type.

3. Use flags to control what WUs you get
Locate your shortcut to the folding @ home program or create a new one. Right click it and press "Properties". Unde the "Shortcut" tab, find the "Target:" box. Add -advmethods -forceasm to the end of the target outside of the quotes so that it looks something similar to:
"C:\Program Files\Folding@Home\winFAH.exe" -advmethods -forceasm
AMD processor users, however should not use "-forceasm" and add "forceSSE" like this:
C:\Program Files\Folding@Home\winFAH.exe" -advmethods -forceSSE
The "-forceSSE" flag makes a big differance for AMD's. Watch your temps, though, it does seem to get a little warmer. Make sure the "SSE" part is capitalized.

And Here is A program called Electron Microscope

http://home.comcast.net/~wxdude1/emsite/em3.html

. It will tell you how long it will take to finish the protien, and how points it is worth.
Folding Will stress your cpu a little if you have it on 100% load you can tell it to use as much as 100% of your cpu or as little as 1% 50% Is good if you like to play games and all you can also pause it while you play games. That is the only problem I have ran into when running FAH is it does make your fps much slower if not paused.
The reason I started folding is because Iof my daughter which has a rare genetic disorder called cri_du_chat. We all have our reason's. If you have any question's feel free to ask them. I will try and answer them. Also I will make a skin for the client for beepingcomputers.com

Here is a screenShot of it in action

Great post and looking forward to the skin!

Also if anyone is interested in a making a logo for the folding, feel free smile.gif It asked and I am pointing to a fake one currently. For those who may have used SETI in the past, this is a very similar process, but as Brunt said it is for a good cause!

And for those who want to see videos that provide a powerful description of Folding then you can take a look at these:

Can one participate even if on a slow dial-up connection?

Or is this best suited for those with DSL or Cable connections?
brunt
Good Question KoanYorel.. Yes you can participate with dial up. There is an option in there to dial a connection when folding is done. You can uncheck it that way Only when you go online will it download a new protien. It doesnt matter if you have dsl or dialup it works off of your unused cpu cycles.not your internet speed. Glad to have you aboard!! thumbup.gif
brunt
I just wanted to add don't be put off by that it may take 3 to 10 days to finish one protein those are worth the most point's. Hence the competition.

Here are some of the movies for FAH

I am working on it!! If we have multiple machines can we use the same name on both machines so the points go to the same person?
brunt
yes when it asks for your name just put the same name in both and points will go to the same person!!
Grinler
Muahaha...bware. Im installing this on all my clients computers..just kidding
brunt
Well I only have it on my power pc. My other 2 are (well ones my wifes and I have to clean that out everyday) because she dont understand Gator (gain) and having all those extra toolbars bad lmfao.gif ... the other one is the one I am on all the time and I keep it around 25% usage so I can do my stuff. So if I get a large protien as you always do the first one it cold take 20 days to finish on25%. Thats a good idea though. Install it on all the pc's I build ph34r.gif ..
HuckerJ
I have a few questions:
*Is the screensaver the same as the Graphical client in fullscreen?
*Does F@H only consume CPU power that's not being used? Like can I set it to 100% but it will only use 100% when I'm not doing anything?
*What is WU?
Scarlett
That is soooo amazing! Im completly blown away! ohmy.gif I swear that I got goosebumps while viewing the videos.
brunt
HuckerJ,
the screensave is not really a"screensaver" if you want it to show on your desktop it will otherwise you will just see a little like rachet in your taskbar, If you put it to 100% it will slow some things down, unless you have a hyperthreading cpu. If when you game or shoting like that intense you can pause it and it wont bother anything. And a WU is a work unit. Some are 25 points all the way up to 255 points the biggerr the point value the longer it takes. You dont get to choose what WU you get it chooses it for you, I just happend to get a high point WU and the one im working on now is another high point on.

Scarlett, I know it makes you want to do it I love those videos I will look for some more!
JEservices
Im signed in, and up and running, using the same user name. Thanks alot for the information on such a good cause. I do have a question though.

In the screen shot that you provided, it looks really nice, but mine doesnt look the same-I only have one window open, with 3 icons in the taskbar. Would you mind providing the options that you used and the applications? Im sorry if you had already mentioned it in a previous post.

BTW I thought that folding was actually about clothes, as a joke, until I read more about it. lol
brunt
JEservices Welcome to the team.!!! As for my screen shot I also have the electron microscope running. Download it here. It tells you how many point's your work unit is worth and how long it will take to finish. The first one you get usually takes the longest to do but is worth the most points exept in my case laugh.gif My second one is taking forever since my son love to turn my coputer on and off so had to run out and get another case that locks! If you download it and have any problems setting it up post back! Again Welcome to the team!!!
brunt
Our First well 2nd WU it wont list the first untill you do 2 and to think were far from being in last place thumbup.gif
JEservices
My first one has a WU of 500, and it will take about 24 hours to complete.

Also, I got this from the readme file, in case it may apply to some users here:

KNOWN PROBLEMS:

(1) Problem: Full screen mode on some Voodoo cards can cause crashes under
windows 98*Grinler Suggestion: Run the console version, or don't go full screen
brunt
Yes Jeservices I would not recomend the full screen to anyone. What I do is let it start and close it on the screen. I would turn off my screensaver as that is when alot heat get genrated and startes using alot of your cpu.
Grinler
I see 3 WU thanks to HuckerJ smile.gif

Something tells me my machine at the office is not doing it for some reason
brunt
Good Job HukerJ Here is your cert thumbup.gif
JEservices
Woo Hoo I finished 2 of them...a 500 and 250. It d/l my next one at 10000. I had to look at it several times to see if that was really accurate lol. Lets see, if it took 24 hours to finish a 500, then this one is going to take 20 days!?!?! unsure.gif wacko.gif blink.gif rolleyes.gif

Oh well, at least it is for a good cause
brunt
no actually the higher the WU the faster it goes and less it is worth.! that 10,000 wu will not take very long to finish! The 400 wu's are worht the most and take the longest. There called gromacs . ANd congrats

JEservices
Thanks for the information on that. You are right, it does not take nearly as long. Already at 43% complete. Thanks for the cert.

My taskbar icon indicates: F@H Working (2/400) smile.gif

ColdinCbus
Hey, this is great to see you guys have a folding team here. As a member of Team Helix, I welcome all of you to the fun, Folding gets addictive. cool.gif

The one thing I would recommend, use the console client as opposed to the graphical client. The console client puts more power to folding and doesn't eat up any cycles creating the graphics. It is also more stable.

thumbup.gif
brunt
I use both for so I can run 2 on the hyper threading! But going and looking at my stat in seems my fah has been paused for the last 2 weeks!!! whistling.gif .. Im back on track though working on one of those nice 235 pointers!
HuckerJ
Does the graphical client creat graphics when there is no display window? Is the difference in folding power great enough that should switch?
brunt
not really the graphical client just shows up if you double click the icon. If you dont want to see the client just close it if it is showing up on your dekstp.
Papakid
Thanks for the tip about the console client, Iceman. If I read the FAQ's correctly, people on dialup have no choice but to use the console anyway. Is that correct, guys?

Any tips for running a machine with multiple logons?
brunt
you can pause it. When someone else logs on. Or pause the work in progress when you know someone else is going to log on. As for dial up no you can use the graphical clent as well just configure it to where it only downloads data or sends data when you log onto the internet!

You can use the console client on Dialup. You just use "asknet=yes" It should then ask you if you want to connect to the internet when it needs to go. I can also be set to auto dial but I don't think it will log you off the internet.

I use Fire Daemon to run F@H as a service in NT, XP and 2000 http://www.nozero.org/FireDaemonFAH.htm
brunt
thaks for the info coldinbus! I didnt know about the dial up! I have been using dsl for years so I didnt have any clue about that exept through configure! And only download when you detect a connection! Now I know!
ColdinCbus
I found this in Team Helix FAQ regarding dial up modums.

I just started the second F@H project. (0/1000) I have a 3 hour download going in the background, this and a couple other Firefox windows open. Page loads are understandably slower, a Sygate alert popped up twice indicating F&H was callin' home and I "approved" and hovered my cursor over the tray icon to confirm the change.

This thing works like a charm...maybe with a few million home/business users at the task and diligent researchers benefitting from it I'll avoid being one of the 50% of all 85yr olds with Altzheimer's Disease. I've got 35 years 'til then. (maybe)
phawgg
Working on the second work unit, and the process FahCore_78.exe has been keeping the cpu at 100%. This wasn't the case before, that I recall. Normal?
phawgg
How do I scale it back to say 50%? Constant 100% cpu use hasn't upped the temperature in the system or cpu but I sense some strain and want to adjust it. I don't seem to find a procedure in my reviews of the information.
brunt
you right click on the little cog, and click configure then there is a slider under cpu usage that way you can slide it to whtever you want!
phawgg
That'll work!
brunt
New update for the electron microsope.

A team member has been briefly side-lined. I went to their support forum and got a very quick response:

New postPosted: Fri Aug 13, 2004 12:55 am Post subject: Reply with quote
Stop the client and replace it by the new v5 and everything should work (Don't update if you are using Win 9x/Me).
BTW: Even without updating you can get all the stats you want at http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/stats.html
Best regards

EDIT: To update the client, just replace the old FAH4Client.exe bx the new one, let all other files untouched

I was at 670/1000. sad.gif

a minor set-back, we've got a score of 5,159 and 72 WU Count as of now.
brunt
Ya I have to check into it! I have finished 17 WU's and half of em are 244 pointers, there a trick to getting just those, and I am not getting credit and points for them! There all in my qued file. I keep trying to send em but they wont take za aloows it but for some reaosn there site wont accept.

OK, I got my answer from F@H forum. The EMIII comes into play. I can do without it, and get back on board immediately. That would leave me with questions about it, though. One question I have is this:

Where should it's folder be?

I have it unzipped to a folder in my downloads folder. I launch it from there, as an install wasn't done. The answer I got for my problem brings more questions to mind.

Here it is:

At this point, I would recommend that you install v5 again, and use the same folder location.

Be sure you check both copies of the startup folder (one called "all users" and one with your username) before your next reboot. There must be not more than one shortcut with the protein icon commonly called the "red gear".

If you have configured EMIII to start the client, remove the last shortcut from the startup folder, since you're choosing to use EMIII to do that - - or uncheck that box in EMIII.

Let us know what happens, since it's not entirely clear what caused your initial problem.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, since it's not clear to me how the EMIII fits in, and thinking I should upgrade to the new version anyway if I use it, I thought I'd post for a 2nd opinion. huh.gif

(don't 'cha luv a thick headed cluebie?)

I didn't have the EMIII configured to start the client, as near as I could tell. I downloaded it about 200/1000 into the 2nd WU and it didn't seem to interfere with the F@H operation the way I had it configured. (I don't think I had it working right, though... whistling.gif )

So, how should the EMIII work?
brunt
Em111 is just a little program to let you know how long it is going to take to finish your WU. And gives you some other options. You have to "add a box" then find out where your fah .exe is and point it to that then it will start up and give it awhile to read how long it is going to take!
