I have a Philips DVD8631 drive in a Dell Dimension 3000

Until recently the device was working properly.

Today, however, there is no D Drive shown in "My Computer"

Device manager shows the device with a yellow exclaimation mark, Right click on and select "properties" and I get "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

If I click select the driver tab and click "update driver" I am told that windows cannot find any better driver than the one already installed.

I have downloaded new firmware and driver (BD10.exe), but it can't find any attached device.

I have uninstalled the device, and reinstalled it but get the same result

Is this a hardware issue (is it mullah'd) or a software issue?

Well...I would check Event Viewer and see if there is anything about a disk failure or disk problem.

Is the drive reflected properly in Disk Management and the BIOS?

Power is going to the drive?

I would also just disconnect the PS and motherboard for the drive...reconnect the drive with a different IDE cable (switch with the one for the C: drive, if necessary), reconnect the PS...and see what happens.

We are trying to eliminate/confirm the possibility of a hardware issue.

Even better if you have a second desktop available for 10 minutes or so: Remove the drive and try it in another known good working system.

those phillips drives were really a benq 1620 and a good drive in it's day, being so old it may just have given up the ghost, has it seen heavy use? 3 years old is quite old for dvd burner

after garmana's suggestion I would try louis's

Hi, Wizard:

I had a similar problem yesterday. Check my other posts in this forum to see if anything helps there, but try here to troubleshoot and hopefully fix your issue:

Code 39 is also mentioned at the above support page. I hope you can fix your problem quickly!
