We in the top 1100 as a team for rankings! Next goal is the top 1000!

According to KakaoStats we should be within the top 1000 in about 45 days.

One can't fool a Yano for very long.
Toshiba dual cores are running rampant in July.

Apr 21 2008, 09:41 AM
Nice. I have thought about rebuilding my desktop. It was very fast back in 05, but now it's 08 and it's running late.

When you say Toshiba dual-core, does that mean they manufacturer them or are they contracting it out to let's say AMD/Intel?
KoanYorel
Apr 21 2008, 10:37 AM
All Intel duos.
I have a Tech friend that is buying up full XP software, as much as he can afford. He will do well in the next few years selling the XP at premium.
and has again offered me a buy on Toshi' lappies at major discount. I have two here now - both with VISTA. I like them.
But I would like to have one or two with the XP on them. (I just burnt up an older XP super PC and attempting the HD recovery.)

Cool. The only thing I would warn you about using laptops for F@H, and I've noticed this with mine, if it gets hot quick there is a hardware safety switch that will shut it off. I think my laptop shuts off when it hits about 75C inside. My desktop normally runs around 35-50C (50 in the summer), but I don't let it shut off when it gets too hot. (My temperature device on my chipset is faulty and it'll report the computer at 95C, but when I measure it using my infared temperature reader it's only a meer 42C.
KoanYorel
Apr 21 2008, 06:54 PM
Ayup... They should be called "lapwarmers"...
Mine all sit atop a stainless steel table - a natural heat sink and my place is always about 60-65 F.
I've not seen sensor temps above 38C on either of the two I have here now.
//Aside: I hear you crashing through the woods back there Billy3... FOLD ON!
yano
Apr 21 2008, 07:21 PM
That's not bad. I never thought about using stainless steel tables before? I have my laptop sitting on two piece of wood, each are about 1" in width and spaced about six inches apart, and the laptop sits right on it. That way air can get to it. This recent set up of mine has been working and it has only shut off once because I was trying to do too many things at one.

Billy3 is really moving! Keep folding!

Apr 21 2008, 08:29 PM
I just happened to buy a SS butcher's table many years ago. After I lost my cottage in a fire a few years ago, I started revisiting how I was doing some things.
It made sense to use that table as my main desk. It's 9' long and 3' wide. Holds lots of equipment including HAM/CB/and other radio equiptents.
All my UPS now sit in SS trays - fire prevention.
//Edit: one can always add an SS or Aluminum top sheet to any surface. SS is expensive. Alum is not.
yano
Apr 21 2008, 10:34 PM
Interesting. Good idea to for the desk. Is aluminum as fire resistant as stainless steel?
KoanYorel
Apr 22 2008, 06:57 AM
Both about the same I'm guessing.
Aluminum melts at around 1220F and SS around 1400F.
I doubt one would hang around the area after the temps reached - say 150F - snicker.
yano
Apr 22 2008, 04:20 PM
Oh I bet! That would be rather hot! But I'll have to keep the idea of aluminum and SS in mind for my PS3 and laptop.

Out of curiosity, how much of your electricity bill do you think you donate towards F@H?
KoanYorel
Apr 25 2008, 10:01 AM
I'm not sure as I've not measured my computers' daily usage. (I don't have an inline meter.)
But it's not much more than a dollar a day running two systems 24/7. I do have relatively inexpensive electric services. My place is 100% electric also - heat, AC, and low wattage appliances & lights.

I've noted that if I don't have the auto reporting, that I get penalized points no matter how quickly my systems fold a project. That's cr**!
I often have to reset, then resubmit a fold project because the servers are too busy?
I've only dedicated two systems to the folding project now. Makes no sense to me to use anymore.
Have "we" as folders overloaded their ability to process the results? It appears so to me.

Ok, I'm looking all over, but I can't find the answer. I recently got into this, thinking it would be a good cause. I would like folding@home to run as a screensaver only. A lot of times I leave my computer on just sitting there, and I figure it might as well be doing something. So I downloaded the graphical version for windows, and its working fine, but I don't know how to make it work as a screensaver. I go to configure and go to the display tab. From there I see a section that says screensaver, but it's all grayed out and I cannot click it. Can anyone help me out please? Thank you!

Vista is known to have a problem with F@H if it is installed in Program Files. I just run mine from separate folders in Documents.
The following is from the F@H Forum, so I don't know if it will help or not -
[bruce wrote:Version 5 was distributed long before Vista existed, so there are several features that may not work or may require some special tweaks to make work.
First, be sure you do NOT install in the default directory (which is in "/Program Files")
Second, look for interactions with the new Vista security features. Some people minimize the impact of these by disabling UAC or by selecting "Run as Administrator" in several different places or even installing in WinXP compatabilty mode, depending on the particular issue. The ideal combination of enabling programs (including FAH) to run as you intend them to vs. the new security features protecting you from unknown threats that WinXP cannot counter has not been found.
Third, the graphics in FAH is written in OpenGL and support for OpenGL varies between "pretty poor" and "adequate" I've found that Aero, with it's fancy transparency features, adds even more graphics issues. Switch to a different Theme or graphic feature settings.
Some of the Vista issues are being addressed with the V6 versions, as they show up in beta testing. Stanford tests the client in WinXP.]
"I found a fix to the problem. I simply right-clicked on the executable winFAH.exe, selected Properties and under the Compatibility tab set it to run in compatibility mode for Windows XP (SP2). That made the screensaver options available in the Configure panel. It now happily runs as screensaver.
I did not need to (re-)install it in compatibility mode or anything --only the executable needs to be configured to run in compatibility mode. It appears to run quite happily from the Program Files folder as well. All the Aero eye candy is enabled --it is not bothered by that. Performance appears fine with the standard ATi OpenGL drivers that come with my Radeon X1650Pro (catalyst driver package 7.11).
It does help to set the Windows screensaver to "none" in the Control Panel, otherwise there may be some visual artefacts. But otherwise FAH simply overrides the Windows screensaver setting."
Cheers

B#$@% Vista laptops. If I don't check them for a week, I quite often find that one or both have frozen for no apparent reason. And people can't understand why I reckon VISTA sux. LOL. I have been getting a swag of tiny 47 pointers lately, dunno why. Production has halved since I started running 6 CPUs five months ago.
Never mind, every little helps. Seriously thinking of getting a 120 GB PS3 next January - catch me then, LOL. That will give me a spare 40 GB drive I can hook up to the desktop and crack the magic TeraByte mark. Only 970 GB at the moment.

Hello all!
I have been offline folding-wise for quite some time. Dad quit his job and we had to save on electricity

But all is well now and I will be getting things setup.
I have a new job as well and will be getting access to approx. 10 machines with Core2Duos. I'm going to see if I can run the client on there

Ensure you get written permission from the administrator or Boss before you set the F&H client on any system there at your new job.
You don't want to be held responsible for any problems.
Ten Core2Duos will turn out some serious WU's. Good luck.

Well.. I thought I'd be using those Core2s... and I am, but the problem is that I don't have physical access to the machines. I simply log into them using the VMware server console. And I can't run Fah in the VM, because that will screw up other production servers that are running on those physical machines.
