Windows XP home doesn't recognize my cdrw/dvdrom drive. Toshiba dvd-rom sd-r2312, in an HP laptop. I have uninstalled and run the add hardware wizard, and tried to update the drivers, both of which were unsuccessful. I tried the windows troubleshooter, but that only suggested the previous two ideas.

The drive isn't fried, since it does boot from XP windows cd and an ubuntu 7.10 cd that I have.

I can't get into BIOS, since my computer was repaired under warranty and motherboard was changed - HP to Compaq. There's now a password that I don't know. I could possibly find out but I'm doubtful.

I'm really not sure what other avenues are available to me. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You need to locate the motherboard battery and remove it for a while

That got the drive back again - and very easily too.

However, when I insert a blank cd into the drive I get an error message - "d:/ no accessible, incorrect function". Again, uninstall / reinstall and udating driver are suggested in other forums, but that's not successful. Also suggested was going to the Recording tab in Properties and checking 'use this drive for recording' or something to that effect, but I don't have a Recording tab.

Not sure what forum topic I got it from now cos I had a bunch open, but this helped me and was simple - even though it was modifying the registry which is apparently scary.

It seems to get back the burning ability. I will now try and burn something.

The Microsoft article seemed to work, but then Windows burner wouldn't work. I uninstalled, restarted, and installation happened automatically - but without burning. So I changed the registry again, checked the box on the Recording tab in CD properties, then downloaded deepburner - and I have success!
