I'm trying to hook up a wireless Linksys WRT54GC router in my DSL service. I'm getting an error message that says the same IP address is already being used. I suspect that means that the DSL modem and the router are attempting to use the same address - 192.1678.1.1

That means that two systems that are plugged into the router have the same address. Your computer does not know what the address is on the wan side of the router. Do you have more than one system connected through the router, wireless or otherwise?

This can be caused by having a static IP address on a system that's within the DHCP range of the router (when the system with the static IP is off, the router will assign that IP to another system. Then, when you turn it back on a conflict will result).

This can also be caused by computers using hibernation/standby. When they hibernate/standby, they disconnect from the network but retain the IP address in the memory. If another computer is turned on, it can be assigned that same IP address. Then, when the computer is resumed from hibernate/standby, the IP address conflict will result.

OK I finally figured this out, although I'm not really sure what it is I did. LOL
