I just started up my old Win98 computer and tried to run Windows Update. It tells me two problems that I have:

1) The Win Update website says that I have to be running as an Administrator in order to run Windows Update. You can't actually be an Administrator in Win 98, can you? In any case, the Microsoft support site (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316524) tells me to try various things, but I don't think any of them apply to Win 98 either. Am I wrong?

2) It says that my security settings are keeping me from installing ActiveX controls, but even with the Security level set to wide-open-hurt-me-vulnerable it still won't install ActiveX controls.

Any thoughts?

You may still be able to get your updates for 98 here:

http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/
http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/about.php
http://windowsupdate.62nds.com/whyuse.php

You will have to install another browser. I recommend Firefox. Then install the plugin for Windiz into Firefox. (The plugin is SAFE.) You can always uninstall Firefox after you get your updates if you don't want to use it for browsing.

Windiz will scan your computer, much like Windows Update, and then give you the list of updates for you to install. If memory serves, it will also put a copy of all the updates you install in a folder on your C: drive. You can save these to CD in case you ever have to do it again, but don't want to use Windiz Update. Of course, each update would have to be manually installed in that case.

Windiz has had to stop working on current updating but according to their announcement, it will still work for updating all operating systems through XP up until they stopped operating "live" a couple of months ago. I don't think they supported Vista yet. The announcement is here:

As I said, I "think" the site will still work. I hope so. My granddaughter's older computers are in need of reinstall and when I do that for them, I'm hoping I won't have to hunt down all the patches and updates separately.

Good luck!

P.S. Windiz works for Windows Me too.

That helped me add the updates; thanks. Now, does anyone know why I still can't install ActiveX controls?

Even thoght Microsoft don't support Win98 and ME anymore you can still use their web site to check for available updates.

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

It will check which OS you are running and show you a list of the updates that it advises you to install. You just select the ones you want to install. dry.gif
