Hello,
I have a CP 1272 NB and it went out some time ago, I think I have tried just about everything to get the screen to come up, I admit it is kind of old but it still turns on.
I bought it off the shelf so to speak from RS, in 1999, then sent it to me and the battery never worked even with new but I used
it for years, then I began having problems, I don't know if it was before or after I installed AOL, but, if I remember correctly it started reading disk that weren't there when I would load a disk it would display inf. from a disc that wasn't loaded.
I restored it from Q-restore disk.
It was up for a while then quit one day, It turns on but the screen is horizantaly stripped all the way up and down. When I try to enter the BIOS I get a golden screen so it may be trying to do something same thing I think with safe mode, but there is no picture on the screen.
I am looking for some genius to help me trick this machine into working again.
I have found small compartment on underside; Memory Expansion, The rest of the computer I have never opened it to check out the MB etc.
Any help . . . . fantastic !

Hello,
This could be a heat issue or possibly faulty hardware. How hot is the system running? What graphics chip does the system have?

Its been a while, I'm not sure what I cam come up with in the form of answers let me check on it, I have had similar thoughts, . . I do not hear the fan on it running but then again its been so long since, I have had ir running I'm not sure I remember what the fan sounds like.
I'll get back to you. Thanks

nigglesnush85,
Well you may have something there, . . . the fan does not appear to be moving, so maybe what happen was it was left on and the fan stopped running, have any idea what kind of damage I'm looking at ?

Here is what I have found at trouble shooting Laptop LCD's
Laptop RepairThe video on the LCD screen is garbaged.
Try to connect the LCD screen to an external monitor. If the external video is fine, you have a problem with the LCD screen or the LCD video cable. You can try to fix the problem by re seating the video cable on the back of the LCD and on the system board.
If you see the same garbaged video output on the external monitor most likely it is not the LCD screen problem. In this case the system board (with on board video) is bad or the video card is bad.
Now I have found the External Monitor port, but where doe this connect to my External monitor that my Desktop uses ?

If the power is on and the fan isn't running the damage caused can range from very slight to severe. it is likely that you are using an adaptor on the monitor, the monitor cable simply plugs into the monitor port then it can be used, if the adaptor on the monitor port can be removed safely you should be able to work.

Well, I owe you the compliment of, " your fantastic " !
I got to peer at my windows 98 screen again, I connected to external monitor and there it was, so, I figure maybe its fixable.
There seems now to be a slight glimmer of W(* under the garble, but I'm going to have to research this and find out what options might be available, . . .
I guess I am going to have to open it up and do some dusting, do you know if I am going to have loose pieces or not when I open it, I do know that I have unscrewed all the screws on the bottom cover except one, it doesn't want to move that might mean that I may have to get it to a shop but only to get that screw loose, . . .
however I don't want to open it all the way up if I am going to have some pieces fall out. I'm not sure what I'll be looking for excepting fans and maybe a video card, wish I knew what it looked like I get to some parts guide for notebooks soon.
if you want any specs or anything let me know, I'm not sure if I'll be here much longer this morning but I'll probably be back this afternoon. So, thanks for now !

Thats ok, If an external monitor can be used to see if the system is working, then the laptop screen is not working as it should and could be broken. If you can see garbaled images even using the external lonito, then it is most likely to be a graphics problem.

I really cant tell if I could see a screen at the time it appeared to have some windows colors just slight glimmers of the
orig screen icon, but mostly now when its own I get gold or changes to other forms of blank etc, colored screen, sometimes etched lines etc.
I'm tried to post an error report from video testing but 98 won't read floppys to xp, maybe i'll find a way later.

Thank you,
I'll look at that, of course I am still dealing with a fan(s) that are stopped, . . .
so, is the driver issue related to overheating ?

It could be, but the main problem would be the overheating.

I'll let you know what happens, I will try the driver first, it won't heat up that much, I hope to get to it before morning, EST, so thanks.

Hey Alan,
I found this;
Presario 1200 Series Specific Models NeoMagic 2097 Video Driver
... Customer Care Presario 1200 Series Specific Models NeoMagic 2097 Video Driver Printable version ... Description Unpacks the files needed to install the NeoMagic 2097 video driver for the affected Presario 1200 ...
but I can't make it out, it seems to say that it unpacks files but does not contain or have the actual driver, which is;
neomagic.exe
I searched Compaq for this and came up with nothing, . . would you care to comment,
I did not download this directly because I thought this would be a little easier, and wanted to find out a little more about the driver, I hate paying Paypal they ripped me off once for pushing the wrong button.
I don't mind buying the driver but I would like to make sure I need it before I go through all that trouble.
I am not sure how the fan(s) stopped running but I also suspect that this computer may have been left on and closed in and possbly may have had the rear fan obstructed, I am also understanding that this can cause damage to the screen, as it compunds a heat problem, and the screen becomes effected.

With the driver, as long as there are files you can tell the OS to install the driver from a specific location then point it to the folder, I was not aware that you had to pay to download drivers from that site, That is an example of poor business practices, I will add that site to my waste of time list, and will search for a replacement site.
Regarding the fans, if they were obstructed, then the motor will have been ruined, you need to take measurements of the fan(s) and search retailers for replacements.

Hello Allan,
If you are referring to ;
Presario 1200 Series Specific Models NeoMagic 2097 Video Driver
... Customer Care Presario 1200 Series Specific Models NeoMagic 2097 Video Driver Printable version ... Description Unpacks the files needed to install the NeoMagic 2097 video driver for the affected Presario 1200 ...
but I can't make it out, it seems to say that it unpacks files but does not contain or have the actual driver, which is;
neomagic.exeFound here;
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwar...=en&lang=enI am trying to tell you it does not appear that the driver is part of this D/L, I guess I will have to D/L this and examine it.
In any case the fan obstruction I was talking about I meant that it probably had something in front of it and did not allow it to have a full intake or insulated it from getting alot of cool air, I did not mean that something was jammed into it.
I'll probably get a chance to check that file later today, as stated previous I searched HP and could not find specifics on neomagic.exe.
Thanks much.
