It's always best to use at least 2 scanners, as one will pick up something the other didn't.
For a list of recommended programs, please click on the link below for

I'm a big fan of
SuperAntiSpyware, which has a freeware version for home users

I also use SuperAntispyware, along with Windows Defender for malware.
In conjunction with Sunbelt Kerio Firewall (free version) and AVG Free AV.
All of these programs cost nothing and are available to anyone with download capability.
I always laugh at "best" questions, since there is no way to tell which is truly "the best."
I use a watch analogy...I don't need "the best watch" in order to have the correct time. I think it's the same with computer defense programs. I only want effective programs.

Ditto.
mvps.org is no longer recommending Ad-Aware due to the ever increasing amount of problems. See
here.

I wonder if anyone have tried spyware doctor? They say it is a good spyware scanner.
Spyware Doctor 5.5 has further improved overall computer performance by identifying potentially malicious events earlier in the process launch cycle.
The OnGuard real-time protection in Spyware Doctor can now make decisions on threats at the kernel level and filter them accordingly to block malicious activities.

Spyware Doctor Starter Edition (Vista compatible) is a free alternative.
