Awwww, Terri, I'm so sorry this has come up. When I said "Don't be a stranger," I didn't mean that you should come back with such a dilemma. sad.gif

Honestly, I don't know how to advise you about this situation. It might just be a matter of your having to make your own decision about what you think is right. I'd suggest you PM Steve and ask him to have a look at your latest post.

And remember, we can still help you put together a very affordable "suite" of your own if you decide that's what you want to do. Or if you just want an alternative for In Design, I'm sure that's quite possible. How do you use it? That is, what features does it have that you just can't live without?

Hey, T smile.gif

I actually started using InDesign only because it's what my commercial printer uses and in an effort to cut out "set up fees", I had them make a template from the program they use once I discovered that I have the same program. If not, I would have to send them a jpeg, and they would then have to set it up for printing. So, I guess the solution will end up being that I will have to format a Photoshop CS3 to the exact specs my printer needs to that they could just press print without any setup...so it's not dire....I'm just really pissed that I have a trial version of anything considering that my friend assured me all was on the up and up *sigh*

I'm sorry DIALER, that last reply said "T", but it was actually directed to you

I'm going off to put and temper tantrum now...we'll catch up later
Dialer
heheh... I figured it was either a typo or a shortcut for "thanks." wink.gif

I can't imagine sending a JPEG to a commercial printer. I should think a TIFF file would be preferable to that. Many of them can work with PDF or EPS files. Have you checked with them on that?

Yuh, I understand about the temper tantrum. Once you're done with that, you'll undoubtedly be able to see more clearly.

okay, color me needy if you will

but I sent out a "what's up?" to everyone the other day and NO ONE responded. I love that everyone is so prompt in helping me with my program problems, but since there'll be times (hopefully) when it's a stretch before I have another problem...I'd love to think that I can just "drop in" and say Hi to everyone and someone will say Hi right back.

LOL! You can stop in and say hi when ever you like! It's just that we're all busy dealing with other things at times and might not get online for a few days, or have to deal with 2 feet of snow and a broken snowblower and crappy shovel with a busted handle......but I'm not complaining! dry.gif

For your friends issue(s), check out HERE, and as always, keep those fingers crossed! thumbup2.gif
Noot
lmfao.gif stevealmighty I know how you feel as far as the snow. Woke up Sunday morning at 6:30 to 18", then around another 18 that night. Now it looks to be another 8-18" today until tomorrow. sad.gif Since I'm here, anyone want some snow?

Anyway, Dialer is right about jpg going to a commercial printer. If you're going into inDesign, you're going to want to use EPS or TIFFs. Jpgs, gifs, Pngs, etc are used primarily for Internet usage because of their compression. Although they are accepted in inDesign, it isn't recommended. When you send something to the printer, you want to use the best quality, highest resolution images you have; gives you a better print out. Also, when sending to inDesign, remember it's saved as a CMYK color format. Also, even if you're not using inDesign, it's better to do the same.

I think that is all about printing you'll need that I can remember.

Noot brings up a good point about saving in CMYK. I know nothing about the specifics of CS3, but even though you can't use InDesign, I should think that PS can do that, yes? It's important, because otherwise the colors won't print properly. Again, talk to your printer. I think there's a good chance that you won't have to pay setup fees if you can provide images that fit all his specifications. That's one of the reasons I suggested the possibility of using PDF files. The printer should be able to set you up with a template - or at least directions - for using that format.

Snow? Snow? Steve, Noot ... I don't want to hear about anymore snow! mad.gif

Hi, everyone, good to see you're still around and kicking thumbup.gif

Is it just me or does Noot's cat image actually conjure up a sensation...like I start to get annoyed if I watch it too long because I remember how my old cat used to lick my ankles repeatedly...I watch that animation and can actually feel the sandpaper tongue

lol

am I strange?

crazy.gif

err...
don't answer that

Everyone: I will check about .pdf and tiffs when I speak to my printer again...Is saving an image as a pdf very difficult, I've never done that before in my life?

I have got to get out more wacko.gif

No, yes, yes. lmfao.gif

If PS or one of the other programs in that suite allows you to save in PDF format, it shouldn't be difficult. And EPS files - be sure to ask about those too!

No ... you have to stay IN more and play diligently with your software. wink.gif

<While Terri happily watches her sitcom tv_happy.gif Dialer runs off to find a good explanation of EPS for her ... heheheheh>

Remember, Terri, Google is our friend!
Note: this article is on a page for the Linux OS, but the explanation of EPS is appropriate.

Sorry for intruding.. i know this topic went a bit off on the subject, but I need some type of help.

I've read and tried just about everything that's been mentioned on this post, but still no luck with fixing this problem..

My situation is, everytime i try to open a new file or even an existing one, nothing loads. I went searching for the preference file to reset it, but i couldnt even find the file, gone through searching the whole system and everything. I tryed opening through IE, still didnt work.

Most likely, I really need the File>New to work since I need to start working on creating a project.

Thanks in advance to anyone who knows the answer!

Debideb

You tried disabling the version cue too?

If not, this is what worked for me...I couldn't (in photoshop cs3) go to FILE>OPEN and have the files load

They helped me here and this is what worked:

Go to EDIT>PREFERENCES>Filing Handling

if the Enable Version Cue box is checked, uncheck it

close Photoshop, restart it and then do FILE>NEW and see if this works.

I sure hope it does

Hi Terri and Helpers
As a long time Professional Engineer I have used all sorts of drawing and photo programs and one of the hardest most salutory lessons I learned was that anything with Adobe attached to it was buggy and unstable. I finally had to ditch my time investment in Adobe Premier and Photoshop and learn another suite of programs.
Having seen your artwork it is obvious that you have a great talent in that direction. I therefore strongly urge you to have a look at the Corel suite of programs. Corel Draw and Corel PhotoPaint would do the things you are doing at present and will easily output to a file type that your printer will love. But I can't help but think that with your talent Corel Painter would be a joy for you and allow you to fully explore your undoubted talent.
All of these programs are available for trial. Check out the Corel website for details of your computer's minimum requirements. This is probably a good thing to do for your existing photoshop stuff as I suspect that you may be running a little short on computing power and storage space.

Anyhow good luck for your future endeavours

I had the exact same problem as terrispeakz. When asking to open a file in Photoshop (and Illustrator), the window would flicker for a fraction of a second and then Photoshop would freeze, the only thing I could do was Ctrl+Alt+Del my way out of it. The only way I could open a file was to select it outside of Photoshop.

I tried deleting and reinstalling the programs : nothing.
I deleted the preference files as suggested on another forum : nothing.
I deleted all network printers, as it seems to be the answer in some cases : nothing.
Another suggestion that seems to work sometimes is to set PDF as default Printer : nothing.

I was about to shoot myself (or my screen).

Then I stumbled upon this :
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/403/kb403268.html

The problem was that the Open Window was there, but outside the screen ! Here is what worked for me :
Use the keyboard to move the dialog back into view.
1. Choose File > Open or File > Save As. (Choose whichever dialog fails to appear on your screen.)
2. Remove your hand from your mouse or other pointing device.
3. Press and release the Alt key on your keyboard.
4. Press and release the Space bar.
5. Press and release the M key.
6. Use the Left or Right Arrow key to move the dialog box back into view on your monitor. Hold down the Left Arrow key for several seconds. If the Save As or Open dialog box does not appear, then hold down the Right Arrow key until the dialog appears.

Note: If you previously had other displays configured above or below your current display, you may need to use the Up or Down Arrow keys instead or the Left or Right Arrow keys.

7.Choose a file name and other options in the dialog, and then click Save or Open. Photoshop will remember the current window placement, and you can resume using your mouse or other pointing device.

I hope this can help!
