Full Version: Chkdsk Hanging @ 7% On Startup

I have an HP dv2000 with Vista home that keeps trying to run a chkdsk at startup and it hangs up at 7 %. When you hit any key it will not cancel it right away, eveuntally it does stop it and starts windows.

I read some othber forums that suggested you hit F 11 and use the repair hardware option, but my F 11 will not bring up anything.

Although I can get windows started, it's annoying to have to do this every time and I'm going overseas soon and am worried about it crapping out on me.

Thanks for any help provided.

If a chkdsk is being run at startup, Windows is trying to correct a file system error. The fact that you can eventually cancel out of the scan suggests it hasn't "hung". Is there drive activity? Have you allowed sufficient time for it to complete? A chkdsk scan on a large volume can take considerable time. Cancelling out of it each time just means Windows has to try it again at next boot.

I did a system restore and for whatever reason, that let the chkdsk finish without doing the system restore. So the problem is fixed
