We are opening a restaurant. For our setup we have 2 computers that will serve as cash registers, and one computer that will serve as a back office computer (server). All of the computers run Windows XP Pro.
We need to get all the computers networked so that they can communicate with each other.

What I wanted to know is whether a wireless or wired network would be better for this setup and why, and what additional equipment we would need for each setup.

it depends how big the restraut is if and if their are a alot of walls between them. if it is not a big restraut then i would suggest wireless you would need a router hooked up to the computer in the back and usb adapters hooked onto the 2 cash registers computers i don't know much about wired but if it was a big restraut then you would hav a lot of people and walls and all sorts of stuff interphereing with the wireless signal so post back and tell if its big or small restraut then i may be able to help you out more.

As it is a business, I'd stay away from wireless. It'll attract folks trying to hack into your network. You also may have difficulties with signal strength depending on the size of the building, it's construction, and the location of the systems.

A wired network is a bit simpler to setup. The maximum run for the cable is about 300' (100 meters). The real PITA is having to run the cable in a neat, organized manner. I run everything wired through the ceiling and then drop it down a wall to the level of a wall plug. On hollow walls, I run the cable in the wall and install boxes for it at wall plug level - on concrete structures I conceal it's run down the wall with one of those wire covering strips that you can get cheaply at Home Depot or Lowes.

The restaurant isn't too big, and the wiring can be done rather easily, so I think as security and reliability are both very important wired will be the way to go.
