First , I want to thank you for this guide because after trying many others, I finally got rid of the pop ups and redirectings while using IE.
My question: is there a way to get rid of the programs Home Search Assistant installed in my pc as well? Because even if they donīt seem to be affecting any application, I still see them in the add/remove list. They are: Home search assistant; Search Extender; and Shopping Wizzard. Thanks a lot!!!

Yes, you can download the new version of hijackthis:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/hijackthis.php

and then click on Config>Misc Tools>Uninstall Manager. Then remove those entries there
