Hi, I recently have had the proble where both dvd drives, the dvd-rom, and the dvd-rw won't play any dvd's or even see that they're there. My dvd-rw drive also will not burn dvd's as it cannot tell when I insert a blank dvd.

They can, however play audio cd's, I'm wondering how to fix this, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm running Windows XP Media Center Edition, in case you were wondering.

Oh, and I've already checked to see if I can update the drivers, it's telling me they're up to date already.
Robert Isbell
what software are you using to burn cd's and dvd's with?
Budapest
Try deleting the UpperFilters and LowerFilters registry entries and rebooting the computer.

Instructions on how to do this are given here.

With any fix that involves the registry you should create a new restore point and backup the registry first. For backing up the registry I like to use ERUNT.

You may need to reinstall any CD/DVD burning software after doing this.
kevin92
I will try the registry editing as soon as i can, however, im at a different computer right now

And to Robert, I am using Sonic.

Thanks for the replies.
DaChew
sonic is notorious for installing filters that get corrupt

good burning programs don't install filters
Robert Isbell
before you do the registry, go ahead and uninstall sonic an install CDBurnerXP. http://www.cdburnerxp.se/home
kevin92
Okay so here's the deal.

I installed CDBurnerXP, and had no luck burning anything, it didn't detect any disc.

So then I edited the registry, and deleted the LowerFilters, and went to delete the UpperFilters, and realized they weren't there.

Could that be a problem?

I tried uninstalling, then installing CDBurnerXP to see if it worked after the registry change, but still no luck.

Any new suggestions?
Robert Isbell
in device manager uninstall the drive in question and then reboot.
then give cdburner a try, you have uninstalled sonic correct?
DaChew
test the drive and see if it will boot the computer with bootable disks, if it won't, then it's dead and install a new one
kevin92
I don't really want to uninstall the drive, as I have no idea how I would get it back, or how it would affect my system. Can you explain a bit more on that?

And to DaChew, the drive plays cd's, it is not dead. I just bought this computer in January it shouldn't be having problems already.
Robert Isbell
XP will reinstall it when you reboot, so do not worry about uninstalling the drive in device manager.

If both drives are messed up with dvd's but not cd's then Budapest's advise is the best course of action, I have been using that link for almost 2 years in scores of help posts, it works more often than not

here is the industry standard tool for seeing the filters

my favorite burning tool incorporates this feature and a removal tool

Were you logged in as an Admin when you tried the registry fix?
kevin92
Yeah I was logged in as an Admin when I tried the registry fix.

And this is weird...I installed the program that DaChew said, and I checked, and it said I have upper and lower filters, redbook, and imapi.

However, when I go to the registry there is no sign of any filters.
Robert Isbell
okay, I would try uninstalling the drive, then rebooting and letting windows reinstall it.
kevin92
Okay I uninstalled the drive, and restarted, but still no luck.

I notice that I don't have any lower filters on the dvd-rom drive, I don't know if that means anything or not...

Any ideas?
Robert Isbell
I saw that, yet the software chewy said you do. so when you rebooted XP found new hardware and reinstalled the drive, correct?
kevin92
Yes, it didn't say found new hardware or anything, but when I checked the device manager, it was back there, so I assume it re-installed.
Robert Isbell
okay what happens when you try using CD Burner XP?
kevin92
If I click burm cd, i get a message saying no recordable media inserted, and i can either retrye, or cancel...it doesn't read that a disc in in the tray
kevin92
Anybody have any other ideas?
Robert Isbell
I have a feeling it's a defective drive, is it under warranty?
kevin92
I'm thinking it is, it's under a year old, and I bought an extended warranty on the computer.

I just didn't want to give it back in, because I have some downlaoded games...do you knw if they would care at all about that?
Robert Isbell
you should be able to just get them to send you a replacement drive. who built the system?
dc3
Do you have access to another computer that you could try the drives in individually?

Are these two drives sharing a IDE cable, and are they connected with the proper master and slave jumper configuration?

Have you tried using a different IDE cable?
DaChew
I have to agree with dc3, you might even test each drive connected as master at the end of the cable with the other drive disconnected

I have seen people rma 2 new dvd burners from newegg and the third one had the same problem
Sneakycyber
If the computer is under warranty make sure opening the case is not voiding it. Some manufactures put a sticker over the seam between the case and the side panel. It shouldn't since your allowed to add upgrades to the computer, some manufactures are picky though.
kevin92
Okay, so to DC3, no, I can't test them on another computer. And can you explain how to check what you were telling me about with the IDE cables?

and sneaky, there was no sticker, so I can open it without voiding any warranties.
dc3
This tutorial is for hard drives but basically is the same thing as far as connecting the master and slave position and the proper jumper settings, about the only difference is the location of the jumpers on the rear of the drives. When you see this tutorial it will show you what a IDE cable is and the proper locations on the cable to attach the master and slave drives. You should also double check you connections and make sure that the connectors are firmly seated. If you still have problems after this you might want to try another IDE cable.
Budapest
If both DVD drives are giving you problems then you might want to delete the IDE driver, reboot and let the OS reinstall it on reboot. Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device Manager button. Click the plus sign to the left of the entry IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Right-click on the entry Secondary IDE channel and select Uninstall. Close out of all the windows. Reboot and try playing a DVD to see if there was a change.
