This is for an WXP OS !

I know it says W98, . . ! ?

Compaq Presario 4400US
WXP

I am presently looking at a dark screen with white text, as follows ;

Starting Windows 98. . .

The following file is missing or corrupt: HIMEM.SYS
There is an error in your CONFIG.SYS file on line 1

The following file is missing or corrupt: CD1.SYS
There is an error in your CONFIG.SYS file on line 5

Bad command or file name
A:\>_ (blinking cursor)

I expect that I am suppose to enter some type of data there ?

I can not enter my desk top beyond this point.

=============================

Also at another time, (same computer same half hour of previous incident above), while attempting to enter Safe Mode, . .

The System Flash ROM Image has been corrupted

I am not sure how all this has happened I recently installed a used PSU that is more powerfuul than the last, I also had the HD out and installed in an External Enclosure where I opened it on another computer etc.

Look fo0rward to your comments, suggestions and advice to get this behind me.

okay, you used that floppy, thought it was up and running, did I miss something?

does it give the system flash rom message every time?

you just need to use the xp cd, erase any partitions and then recreate them. and install from there.
Jove
Yes you did,

This computer is the Compaq Presario 4400US, the one we were working on was a Compaq Presario 5300US, . . I have not done anything yet on the 5300US

Regarding this problem, . .
Today I did run a REG Booster scan but I didn't do anything ?
I can't get it to run the WXP service Pack 2 CD, either.

OK are we set straight, this thread is the 4400US, I do not have any idea why it is telling me that W98 is starting ?

Robert Isbell
someone probably upgraded to XP from 98, or formatted the HDD in this one with a 98 floppy.

what version of xp does it have?
Jove
It is XP sp1

I think it is the original HD that came with the computer, and it was XP1

What about the blinking cursor, . .is there something I should be typing in there that you know of ?
Jove
I am now using the six Floppy disk for the Windows Setup, it is loading files.
Somehow it got to disk 4 and reported that SPport corruption then press key to restart and it restarted.

Robert Isbell
just use the XP cd (not the SP2 update cd) and redot he partition and install xp.
Jove
Correction Compaq Presario, 4300US, . .

OK I re-entered after turning off the computer same problem occurred;

Although I am curious as to what would be required if I typed something in where the blinking cursor is, . .

I am looking at your last post, . .

just use the XP cd (not the SP2 update cd) and redot he partition and install xp.

The xp cd your talking about must be this one;

Compaq Operating System CD
Microsoft Windows XP Home
(Only use with Compaq Restore CD)

There are 2 other disc that came with the computer;
Restore Supplemental Software
and
Compaq Restore Plus !
(Start with this CD for restore)

Thats it, no others.

Which of these do you think I should use, and will it erase any files ?

P.S. There are only 2 things I can think of concerning the W98, The manufacturer reused the HD, or it somehow was corrupted when I took it out placed it in an exterior enclosure, plugged into the computer that had an unknown HD, which may have been a revamped 98.
Jove
Here's one for ya !

I found that I had left a deleted or formatted Floppy Disk that was was not necessarily used in a windows 98 computer but it is possible I may have used it in a notebook W98, . .anyway it had a couple of notepads on it. it was in the floppy drive, during this whole show, I removed it and restarted and there was my WXP welcome screen !

However this is not the first time that this has all happened as it happened a few days ago, I'm not sure if it was the same case then.
So, I'll wait and see if this occurs again then I will revive this thread.

Thanks,
Jove
