hello,

i think my graphic card is fried sad.gif

was working on sorting out my PC (a monthly scan and clean up) and used registry booster 2 to defrag the reg and clean up any issues as have done a lot of deleting and moving of files lately.

anyway, long story short, i needed to reboot and when the PC came back on-line i was in 600x800 res and my nvidia 6800 GT no longer was working. fair enough. i restored ALL registry changes and even did a system restore and still no good.

was able to get the res back to something useful and have since tried to install the nvidia drivers 91.47 but have had NO luck in getting the nvidia 6800 GT working. most recently i installed forceware 163.75 but i think that one is a bit too much for my uses, should i try another one???

when the PC boots up nothing from nvidia loads like it used to, apart from the nforce tray options but thats only for audio. and can i update that one by the way?

i have dual monitors and am currently running on the integrated graphics from the moboard.

have re-started numerous times using system restore, re-installing drivers, uninstalling drivers from add/remove in control panel and still no luck.

i'm starting to fear the worst that the vid card is fried (after googling for a few hours).

you guys are always my last hope and you always come through with great news, i hope its true this time too smile.gif

all help is appreciated and thanks for reading!

By the looks of the 2 pics, your drivers are not installed. Do you have the original driver CD that came with the card? I'd try that one first
Mark
liquidmonkey
unfortunately i can't find the original cd which is really bumming me out. tried to look for it on the net but no luck on my end anyway.

get CCleaner, run both the cleaner option and the registry option, multiple times.
then:
Step 1: Download nVidia Nasty File Remover at http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=582
Step 2: Run nVidia Nasty File Remover and search for all files that relate to your driver version, Select them and delete them.
Step 3: Reboot PC
Step 4: Install new drivers.
liquidmonkey
have now used driver cleaner pro again to delete any remaining stuff in safe mode and did a reboot
got the NFR and run it
it picks up all kinds of files but i'm unsure of which ones to remove (did a search only for nvidia files)
there are quite a few, the most part are language files.

should i just get rid of all of them if i'm going to re-install the driver anyway????
DaChew
you have onboard video, the motherboard you quote does not?

liquidmonkey
interesting chewy

can a graphic card still function if the drivers r not installed?
either way i'm getting a display each time with no drivers installed, not even for VGA...weird weird weird
liquidmonkey
ok, no luck yet sad.gif but have discovered something that may help...

my video monitor drivers are not installed as i checked with the samsung discs as i had a hunch about this. anyone heard of this affecting the nvidia driver setup before?
DaChew
Oh you have lots of drivers, that's the problem, too many of them

check back in add/remove programs, uninstall any nvidia graphics driver

next in device manager make sure that your nforce chipset drivers are ok?

the agp under system devices is critical, no agp, no video driver

liquidmonkey
nforce chipset huh?? will check that out now too plus...
also just noticed that there are no 'monitors' in my device manager.
and no 'display adapters' either which is where the nvidia card would be.

anyone ever had this happen??
am trying to re-install my samsung monitor drivers now...
DaChew
agp then video driver then monitor will be plug and play

everything in the right order or you might as well format and reinstall and try again

it is rocket science

liquidmonkey
checked the AGP where u said and i have a 'nvidia nforce2 agp host to pci bridge'
is this the one you mean??

anyway, here is a pic of my device manager....

DaChew
well if you ran the file remover you should be ready for the nvidia video driver you listed

liquidmonkey
well, i am at a total loss for ideas now.
device manager had the nvidia chipset bit - check
on reboot vga device was recognized - check
installed last known working nvidia driver - check
on reboot the 6800 GT was in the device manager under display but it had a little yellow question mark beside
was unable to install the monitor drivers

the last thing i can think of if there is a base nvidia driver i need to install before going to 91.47. meaning do i need driver A before using driver B?

other than that it seems like i'm in search of a good windows boot cd, know of any reliable torrents??

and thanks everyone for your help, much appreciated but 2 full days on this problem is too much sad.gif
DaChew
In your screenshot of device manager there's an rdesktop video driver that should not be there?

I suspect that's the problem

where in the heck did it come from?
DaChew
http://www.rdesktop.org/

what the heck?
liquidmonkey
rdesktop driver?? will look into that one right now. thanks for looking and noticing. i c an't remeber how to get that view up again, can u help out there?
plus, how can i get rid of that rdesktop video driver? google is not saying too much sad.gif

plus, check this pic out, it shows a memory conflict with my vga properites and must be another clue to the problem.

you have sparked my interest in solving this again chewy, thanks!!!

thanks for that link, u read my mind smile.gif
liquidmonkey
oh yeah, i used to use rdesktop to access work information last year, that must be where it came from. weird how it was never a problem before though.
DaChew
it's a squirrley linux video driver

and google shows issues with nvidia

computers are already an accident waiting to happen without your help
liquidmonkey
yeah, just saw that as well.
good news is that the RDesktop video driver no longer comes up on the system information (used msinfo32.exe) to get that up again.

did u look at the memory conflict attachment i made? any ideas there?
DaChew
well I have the a7n8x deluxe, it's torn up right now, but it took me three loads to get everything right with xp sp2, damn asus drivers are for the most part pre-sp2, when doing a clean install I found the sp2 had almost everything except the sata and the sound, earlier attempts with asus drivers and later nforce just hosed everything

I moderate a burning and blank media subforum so I was real particular about the ide parts, never had any issues with agp or memory conflicts tho

you don't have a pci card installed in the top slot next to the agp slot do you?

liquidmonkey
the top PCI slot is covered by the size of the 6800 GT, its freaking huge, barely fit in my MOBO as its even right against my HDD's.
use one of the bottom PCI slots for a firewire card but thats it.
liquidmonkey
finally got the PC on reboot to recognize the card (after i turned it off and unplugged it) but when it went to install the drivers the error message of 'cannot install this hardware as the drivers are either corrupt or missing' came up.
and this is AFTER i did all the right steps to get rid of ANY nvidia drivers for this card.

i hope a full re-install will sort this out....
Robert Isbell
redownload the drivers from Nvidia for the card or try using the driver disk it came with.
liquidmonkey
just wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone who helped out and in the end i did a re-install of XP which solved everything and as a bonus i'm running much much much faster too!!
this forum rocks, thanks again!!
