Hello again!

I have a young friend who attempted to upgrade is OS from WIN XP Home Premium to WIN Vista Home. After the upgrade he gets a black screen stating: "Windows failed to start.....1) Insert you Windows Installation Disc & restart your computer, 2) Choose a language and press enter, 3) Click repair your computer. Under Tools it listed Windows Memory Diagnostic. My yound friend doesn't have the system discs that came with the computer. What I was going to do was find a Windows XP recovery disc and put his system back to WIN XP and start the upgrade to Vista for him. I can't tell if he installed Vista on a partioned HD and now has a dual-boot problem or what he did? I think the black screen also stated that Vista was corrupt.

Any suggestions?

How were you intending to start a Vista installation for him? If you've got a Vista DVD try running the repair from the startup with that: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial148.html

I'll give that a try.

If he was intending to use the Vista upgrade and not use XP anymore, then the install should be a "clean" install.

Well, I was told that my young friend managed to get his PC working. His aunt said the called Customer Service and he used the Vista install disc to fix the problem. Apperently he missed a step during the upgrade install......
