Well most likely you mise well buy a whole new pc. How old is this pc you want to upgrade?

To add a bigger cpu you most likely will need a new motherboard the new cpu and if you go that far I would get more ram.

Do you have a model number for your compaq?

I just suggest if your old CPU runs at 500mhz to go out and buy a whole new system for 600.00 or buy a good used one for around 300 or 200.

Now thats just what I would do its up to you. If you decide not it is possible to do this upgrade im sure.

Welcome to BC by the way!

I have to agree. The motherboard and the processor, not including the cost of installation, would cost somewhere next to 200 US. Chances are, that with the new processing speed, you will find the other hardware lacking at sometime in the future, or have to begin to replace things that are wearing out, such as your hard drive.
If you shop around(you might consider AMD processors which are every bit as good as Intel), you can find towers, with generous RAM , HD space and even faster CPUs, for between 450-650 dollars after rebates, etc. In the long run, this would be more cost effective than replacing the MB and CPU in your current computer.

John
