I recommend you follow the messages advice, and uninstall Noron. Then load AVG Free Edition. Follow the instruction in the following link.

I couldn't agree more. I'd used Norton Internet Security which included their antivirus program. It missed more infections than I could count. For something I am paying seventy dollars a year for... I kinda need it to do a little better than that. AVG Free, especially paired with AVG antispyware is the def. way to go.

For Norton products, be sure to use the removal tool:

is there any way i can fix it, but keep norton??

If Animal's post doesnt help, is there anything stopping you from following Norton's advice - do you have the Norton installation files/disks and product key?
funnytim
the reason why i'm using Norton is because it came as 'bundled' software w/ my motherboard disc...and i saw it was norton after i installed it, as the disc didn't say what it was. As you know Norton has this crazy licensing where once u start using a license, you it stays valid until it expires (time doesnt stop) even if u uninstall it. I didnt want to waste it, so i thought i might as well use it. I'll prolly switch 2 something else once its expired.

As for following Norton's instructions (installing again)...i lost my product key (oops)...so i dont think i can /shud do it..

I will try Animal's link as soon as i can (I'm on Vista right now..whereas the problem lies in XP).

thxs everyone...ill get bk as soon as i try it

I don't know if they do this for bundled software, but I have Norton Internet Security 2006 that I purchased and installed on a computer running Windows XP. When it finished installing, it created a small text file in C:\Documents and Settings\"my user name"\My Documents\Symantec\Norton Internet Security_2006_Key.txt which contained the product key. You might try doing a search for a file or folder name containing Symantec or Norton to see if you have a similar file somewhere.

Animal's post didn't help. i tried the 2 solutions listed on the norton page, but it didnt work. so i went to the Norton Internet Security _2006_key.txt file, but all it said was:
Please print this page and keep it in a safe place.
You will need this key in the event that you need to reinstall
Norton Internet Security.

Product key:

Subscription length: 90 days

To print this page, press Ctrl-P.

For future reference, you can find this product key in
C:\Documents and Settings\Timothy Leung\My Documents\Symantec\Norton Internet Security_2006_Key.txt

in otherwords..it didnt show the key for some reason.

I'm just guessing here, but the fact that it is a 90 day subscription might have something to do with the missing key. Btw - Has it been 90 days yet? Did you purchase the product? For expired subscriptions, I would expect a popup every time you started Nortons to remind you.

You could try this:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/custs...nam&seg=hho

If that doesn't work, you might need to contact Norton about that issue. Perhaps they can re-issue the product key to you. But if your subscription has expired already, you might be stuck with having to purchase retail, or simply uninstalling it and going with a free AV solution.

Nope...it says theres 39 days left. No i didnt purchase the product, it came bundled, so i thought i might as well use it for now.

On the site u gave me...after i follow step #3, i get this dialog:
http://img122.imageshack.us/img122/6538/norton2gr1.jpg

then i cant go any further.

The "can't repair" error msg (http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/8789/nortonerrorjw1.png) also appears when i start MS word, for some reason.

Since this is a time sensitive issue, I would recommend you contact Symantec support directly, instead of waiting for the possibility that someone here might be able to solve it. I personally do not have any knowledge about this problem - sorry.

Depending on whether or not Symantec can resolve this issue for you will give you a good indication of whether or not you will want to purchase the product when the trial period ends.
funnytim
very good point..i'll email them, thxs!
funnytim
yup....they fixed my problem. nice, their tech support is not bad :D
jhsmurray
Thats good news. thumbup2.gif
Btw - what was the fix?
funnytim
they gave me this address: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/nav.n...src=con_ols_nam

i followed the steps, and it worked fine.

thxs everyone who helped.
