Amazing Andrew
Make a folder where you will store the files to be protected.

Move the files into the new folder.

Rename The Folder appending the following to the name:

.{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

Now, whenever the folder gets opened, it shows the recycle bin! It even has the recycle bin's icon! To access your file, simple change the name back.

(PS the period (.) is essential, don't forget it!)

So, what does this do? Does this hide the files from viruses?

EDIT: Is this only for Windows?

You can also make a invisible folder.

go to new folder and for the name

hold ALT and type
0160
then go to properties and change the icon to be invisible

Lol, how do I rename it? I'm using Vista! Lol. I can't find the thing to show file extentions or anything.

Cool trick there mate - only one problem though........It can be deleted, where as the real RB can't!

Is there a way to protect it from deletion ??

Cheers

nice one! i will definitely use this technique. thanks man!

That's a cool trick but when you add files to it, it just puts them in the recycle bin. so if someone emptys the recycle bin, there goes your "sensitive" files..
Amazing Andrew
You have to rename it to something else to add/remove/access files. Emptying the Recycle Bin doesn't affect files that were added to the folder prior to renaming it.

Ok. I see. Thanks!

That's an awesome trick. I just noticed that if you rar the file, and then unrar it, you can see its true contents. Not sure if that works the same if you zip it, and the properties menu tells you how many files are in it. I'm sure that no one would think to zip and unzip the recycle bin though. Just had to add my two cents in there. Thanks again for the cool tip though. smile.gif

Just to throw in my 2 cents worth, depending on who you are trying to hide files from, this trick is largely useless. If you are trying to hide things from your little brother or some other casual observer, then it will be fine. The software that I use to examine disks looks at raw data, and does not even list file or directory names, so if I had your system in front of me, that trick would be worthless. When computers are examined in the real world, they are first compared against a list of files commonly found on a given OS. Those files that are not common are further compared against lists of known applications. This is necessary due to the size of hard drives; an examiner is only really interested in what is not usual, such as having two recycle bins, a recycle bin in the wrong location, or a compressed recycle bin. That just tells investigators "Hey! Look here first!".

I tried it, and it wouldn't let me rename with that type of file name. Now I decided to delete the folder and it won't delete! What can I do to delete it? It's on my desktop and everytime I try to delete or rename it it would tell me it's being used by another program. I even tried to shred it, to no avail. What happened?
sphygmo
Somehow I think that folder during attempt at renaming got corrupted. It said "type in valid file name" when I tried to paste that file name andrew suggested. Help!
Amazing Andrew
What is it currently named?

In addition to this (sorry to kind of break up the question) could be this:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=q6AQL55zMR4

It shows a way to hide files inside of an image. When you double click the picture, it shows a picture.
