got this last weekend. Checked a lot online, and have downloaded SmitRem.exe, combofix.exe, OiUninstaller.exe, 2 different Hosters, Hijack This. I kept computer off internet connection completely, (unplugged the cable from router) since I was getting a batch of adware showing up every time I scanned, and I was scanning about every 15-20 min. It still "warns" me that it can't get on the internet...
SpyBot S&D always finds it, but cannot delete it. Someone suggested using SpyBot S&D in safe mode to get it. Try that first???
Sorry, I did not do all the things listed in you "before posting HJT", but I don't want to go online from that computer without being fairly certain it will be somewhat safe. My son built this computer, and took his hard drive with him when he moved, so I got new hard drive and OS and have just had it up for about a month before this happened (lazy me didn't have "time" to set up a firewall and get virus software, dumb, huh?) thanks, PB & J
whoops! just ran Spybot again and it got Win32.Agent.qt and Win32.VB.ahq, which also cannot be removed. PB&J

should I go to HJT/System scan and re-remove the ones that are still there, but leave in the one:
02 - BHO: (no name) - {15D2BFC0 - 42EE20...}win sys32mljgg.dll
(I think this mljgg.dll is re-number/named since the HJT sys-scan-only, too. do they sometimes re-name themselves to avoid removal?) (or should I remove that one also)

then run the combofix-do?
Thanks for clarification

Hi

Yes, it is mutated; Vundo can mutate itself.

These are all bad, mljgg.dll just changed CLSID (alphanumerics between {}).

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {15D2BFC0-42EE-4920-A474-CC8234CDDF3F} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljgg.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {DC192567-65F9-4AB6-ADB7-E13575F81726} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljjife.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: mljgg - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljgg.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: mljjife - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mljjife.dll

No point fixing those entries unless files are gone; they won't go away.

Yes you can run combofix-do but it if fails like before then run combofix without combofix-do smile.gif

Hi

"Let me know if I have to go run a regular Combofix..."

No smile.gif

Yes, now those are gone.

Your next step is to install antivirus and firewall:

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic - Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of a third party firewall.

As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:

1) ZoneAlarm
2) Agnitum
3) Sunbelt/Kerio
4) Comodo

If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

After those steps, please post a fresh HijackThis log smile.gif

Hi

Yes it looks good smile.gif

However, let's run one online scan to be sure:

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

    o Scan Options:

    + Scan Archives
    + Scan Mail Bases

  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Hi, great meeting, and I've been back with this baby for about 4 hours.
I've run Kaspersky, then Avast, then Spybot and Adaware, then Avast, then Kaspersky again.
The Avast says I still have quarantined virii in Spybot, but I already deleted them, but they still show in Avast scans.

I think a part of my HP printer software phones-home on a regular basis, but I can't tell what part, or what would happen if I deleted it, so I guess I'll have to call HP to find out. I keep clicking the opt-out button, but it stays there...

Also, I think some program increased the size of my Sys restore file to maximum (366600 MB) so I lowered it, but never noticed how large it was in the beginning.
I have a 300+Gig drive, how much sys restore space should I allocate??? a large sys restore really slows down start-up, even with a new hard drive!

heres the Kaspersky, and the new HJT
I see there are 2 missing files on the Avast. should I delete, and re install?
and thanks bunches!

Hi and sorry for delay.

"I have a 300+Gig drive, how much sys restore space should I allocate???"

Up to you, maybe somw gigs.

Log looks good.

All viruses are in either Recycle Bin (empty it) or in system restore.

I give you later instructions how to empty system restore.

Other than that, any problems left?

this morning it came up with no keyboard again for some reason...
went into safe mode, "last known good", and no problem

what do you think about that MS Search business about logging EVERYTHING and sending reports back to MS? (bugs me, none of their business if I'm looking for a file or program on my own computer!) any way to disable the reporting to MS about my internal file searches?

The viruses are staying in the Avast backup log ( just in case I decide I need them). Says holds them for "3 cycles", but don't know what cycles they are talking about: boots, Avast scans, changes to Sys Restore, or what???

Thanks, think I'm starting to be a little more comfortable with my own computer!

Not 100% sure what you mean but try disabling "error reporting service" via services.msc.

Sorry but no idea either.

Hi

Then you're clean thumbup.gif

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 2 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Reenable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.

This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
  • Comodo BOCLEAN <= Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
  • Winpatrol <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

Also, please read this great article by Tony Klein So How Did I Get Infected In First Place

Happy surfing and stay clean!
