Hi,i have been recieving help from PropagandaPanda in the HJT forum:-

The problems i have are that i cannot open programs and features in control panel,
cannot open internet explorer,

This is a ASUS Notebook X58L series
32-bit
1.00GB
windows vista home basic service pack 1

as this is my nephews laptop i don't have any recovery discs they are with him 80 miles away,
any help would be appreciated.

I'm sorry, you are correct. I read it too fast

The removal of viruses and malware might have damaged certain key files
I would suggest SFC.exe
Seeing as you do not have a retail CD, pay attention to the second post where usasma talks about the i386 folder:

I don't think i can resolve this problem without recovery disc,which is with my nephew,so if you wish you can close this topic,unless someone can come up with another way of solving this.

does this computer have a recovery partition? if yes. http://support.asus.com/technicaldocuments...n-us&NO=498

if no.
have your nephew put the discs in the mail. should have them in a couple days.

Hi keny111111,
Thanks for your reply, the laptop does have a partition but doesn't show anything on it,as i will be sending it back to him tomorrow i have printed the article in the link you have posted so if it asks for disc he can use that.
