No, seriously, they were bought by a corporate entity, and are looking at giving up indexing torrent files.

Heh, I never liked that site anyways.

I'm guessing they'll just let demonoid and isohunt take the brunt of the fallout users, but that site will no longer be popular... it'll fall out worse than a lot of buyouts.

It seems they (GGF) have a good credible plan to keep Pirate Bay alive by paying Users to share files, it seems their plan is to take the strain off ISP's Networks and use the network of File Sharers to download digital content in the future.

QUOTE
The new owners of file-sharing website The Pirate Bay say users will be paid for sharing files.

Global Gaming Factory (GGF) paid 60m kronor (£4.7m) to take over the site.

In an exclusive interview with the BBC, GGF's Hans Pandeya said that the only way to beat illegal file-sharing was to make something more attractive.

"We are going to set up a system where the file-sharer actually makes money," he said.

The full story link is here - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8128551.stm

EDIT: From what I read into it these files will be hosted legally and the content owners will be paid, but I'm not sure how, the best I can think of is that either the Content Owners host the original file and get payment for it then the users who have downloaded it share the file to aid in downloads and thus relieve strain off ISP Networks and get a small payment, where this money comes from I don't know or the company GGF get rights to sell the song or content similar to Apple or Nokia and then charges the user to download the content and then pays them to share the file so relieve strain off the ISP Networks.

Although obviously it will never be as simple as that, just a guess really on how it may work.

I, like many others i presume, cannot see this business adventure working......

The majority of people using sites such as The Pirate Bay do not re-share the files they download and will not pay for access to the files. They will just go elsewhere to download what they want.

Same here I can't see how it is going to work, yeah they probably don't re-share the file after they have downloaded it, having looked at Pirate Bay it seems they have Leechers on the torrents which I assume means those who haven't re-shared the file properly? EDIT: (This is talking "hypothetically")

bleh, pirate bay has really been nearly useless for some time now, horrible organization, horrible turnaround on removing dead torrents and other issues. granted, it's not like they were being paid to do it, or that there enough people maintaining it like it should have been given the volume of users that use it. I switched to demonoid long ago and never looked back.

we all knew TPB would go the way of the dodo eventually... it was just a matter of time.

long live demonid (let's not have a scare like we did a while ago thumbup2.gif )

A Leecher is someone who is downloading a file/torrent from someone who is seeding.

A Seeder is someone who already has the file and is allowing it to be uploaded from their computer.

Majority of users on open sites like TPB will just leach the file and then cancel it from seeding to save bandwidth.

Privite member sites usually enforce a ratio, I've seen them at about 0.9, so if you download 1Gb, you must uploading at least 900Mb. If the ratio falls below what is expected then downloading is cut until the ratio is back on track.

Looks like the buyout might not go as planned:

QUOTE
There was a lot of reaction to the sale of The Pirate Bay. Many wanted their accounts deleted, others merely expressed disappointment. One report, however, points out a reaction of a different sort. As a result, the sale could stall.

One of the founders of The Pirate Bay suggested that one could buy a share in The Pirate Bay, but were people buying shares a little too early? That’s what Aktietorget is trying to find out after the stocks for the buyer, Global Gaming Factory, went up before the announcement of the acquisition.

I thought TPB would simply go away since the big lawsuit loss !
