I have a trojan virus. Below are the AVG and MalwareBytes scans. The infected file (c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\glfaglf.dll) doesn't seem to delete upon reboot, and I've tried to delete this file as well as the infected registry keys in safe mode but to no avail. I've also run Spybot, Hijack This, Ad-aware. Any advice/suggestions is greatly appreciated. As you might have noticed, I'm clearly a novice at this. Thanks, MD! See if you can delete the file using Malwarebytes' FileASSASSIN utility, under the More Tools tab.

Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately, I receive the following message after I tried deleting with FileAssassin:
"The file could not be deleted. Your Computer needs to be restarted to complete the removal process." Even after I reboot, the file is still in Windows/System32. |

Apologies but I must be doing something wrong. When I try to run SuperantiSpyware in safe mode, I'm unsucessful and receive the following error message:
"The Windows INstall er Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed." Thanks. |

You have to install and update SuperAntiSpyware in Normal Mode. Then boot to Safe Mode and run the scan.

Hi, here is the scan log:

Please download IceSword and save to your desktop.

Perform a new Quick Scan in normal mode and check all items found for removal. Don't forgot to reboot afterwards. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. When done, click the Logs tab and copy/paste the contents of the new report in your next reply. Thanks for all for the help! I couldn't have done without everyone's help. Below is the scan. If there's any other comments/advice, please feel free to let me know. Also, what spyware/antivirus software do you recommend to run on my computer on an on-going basis?

If there are no more problems or signs of infection, you should Create a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.
The easiest and safest way to do this is:
Tips to protect yourself against malware and reduce the potential for re-infection: • "Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe". • "How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!". • "Best Practices - Internet Safety for 2008". • "Hardening Windows Security - Part 1 & Part 2". • "IE Recommended Minimal Security Settings" - "How to Secure Your Web Browser". • Avoid gaming sites, underground web pages, pirated software sites, and peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing programs. They are a security risk which can make your computer susceptible to a smörgåsbord of malware infections, remote attacks, exposure of personal information, and identity theft. Many malicious worms and Trojans spread across P2P file sharing networks, gaming and underground sites. Users visiting such pages may see innocuous-looking banner ads containing code which can trigger pop-up ads and Flash ads that install viruses, Trojans and spyware. Ads are a target for hackers because they offer a stealthy way to distribute malware to a wide range of Internet users. The best way to reduce the risk of infection is to avoid these types of web sites and not use any P2P applications. Read P2P Software User Advisories and Risks of File-Sharing Technology. -------------------- "THE BAD GUYS DON'T NEED A SEARCH WARRANT. ARE YOU PROTECTED?"

Thanks for all the help. Everything is working perfect. I'm now using AVG anti-virus for my computer. Is this software good or would you recommend something else. Thanks!

You're welcome.
AVG is fine just. However, keep in mind that no single product is 100% foolproof and can detect and remove all threats at any given time. The security community is in a constant state of change as new infections appear. Each vendor has its own definition of what constitutes malware and scanning your computer using different criteria will yield different results. The fact that each program has its own definition files means that some malware may be picked up by one that could be missed by another. Further, subsequent scanning after updates of a particular security product has been released may result in detection of items which had previously gone undetected by prior scans. Thus, a multi-layered defense using several anti-spyware products (including an effective firewall) to supplement your anti-virus combined with common sense and safe surfing habits provides the most complete protection. -------------------- "THE BAD GUYS DON'T NEED A SEARCH WARRANT.
