For general information ;according to the AVG web site the date that support and updates END for the avg 7.5 antivirus program we are looking at
31/12/2008

AVG 7.5 Antivirus program will now be showing you a greyed out icon?

This means your virus database was last updated on April 30th 2009 and is now out of date ; you can continue to run it but , as warnings on the AVG site state, you will NOT be fully protected ......


From my experience with this program I think we can safely assume it is now defunct and unless Grisoft have a change of heart….

it appears that AVG 7.5 Antivirus has been completely withdrawn as has all support for this version on the AVG forum.

So; you will need to uninstall AVG7.5 , BUT I suggest you also decide which alternative antivirus program you wish to use that is compatible with your Windows version and get its EXE downloaded somewhere on your computer so you can find it readily.
As it is also now impossible to access the removal tool to do the uninstall I suggest you do this ---

From my experimentation with another machine I found this method works on Win 98 SE computer

As you may have seen, AVG7.5 does a scan of Boot Disc at start up?? ; you need to disable this function;

Open your AVG Control panel and go to the Scan Selected Area of the Computer

You should find a Scan at boot up section with a check mark?

Disable this.
Then you need to disable the AVG program per ce;

Via your System Tray icon you can stop the program from running by right mouse click and select Exit Program which should bring up a dialogue box warning you of the impending NON protection of the computer ; click OK
Then you need to open the Close Programs menue so press CTRL/ALT/DEL and in the dialogue box that appears select any and all instances of AVG that you see running .
Next you need to go to Start/Programs/AVG7.5/uninstall/OK

This will give you another dialogue box asking if you wish all components including anything in the Virus Vault to be uninstalled.

As my Virus Vault was empty I clicked OK .

This should then completely remove the AVG 7.5 installation from the computer but you need to reboot the computer for the un-installation to be complete
Once you have done this and successfully rebooted, remember you are now unprotected and need to install and fully update your next chosen AV program

I have Windows XP SP2 -- but I didn't do all those steps to uninstall AVG Free 7.5 A/V. I was instructed to merely use add/remove programs to uninstall (which is what I did). I did not disable check boot disc or anything within the program, nor shut the program down, nor end anything in Task Manager.

After I uninstalled and restarted my computer, I deleted the AVG and Grisoft folders I found in various places on my hard drive, then installed AVG 8.5 Free. When installing 8.5, I opted to not install the safe search thing and it didn't even ask about installing that security yahoo toolbar thing (which it didn't thankfully) -- I updated and now all seems to be running fine. At least, as far as I can tell. I did a scan it it didn't find anything.

Any thoughts...?

I think you are forgetting that I discussed the removal of AVG 7.5 antivirus from a Windows 98se computer?

In preparration for this event I had previously trialled uninstalling it on a test machine I have which alerted me to the problem with the Scan at Boot up time ; I discovered that, unless I disabled this first, I was unable to boot up properly and encountered BSODS when I then tried to uninstall the AVG program; hense my comments that I hope may help those who do run on Win 98SE and have AVG 7.5 Antivirus program installed.

Curiouser and couriouser!

Today 05/21/2009, my AVG Free 7.5 prformed an update that required rebooting.
I am now at AVG Free 7.5.560 and the Internal Virus Database Version now is 270.12.36/2126.

My AVG icon in the task tray is now fully colored, instead of the gray that it has been for the last three weeks.

They still want me to download AVG 8.5, which with Windows ME, I of course, can not do.

Will the instructions given for removing AVG Free 7.5 from a computer running Windows 98 SE, work for removing AVG Free 7.5 from a computer that is running Windows ME?

As you say this does seem very curious

I will load up my 'test' machine that I think still has AVG on it ( have not run it for a while ) and see what happens;

My comment to YOU would be that if your AVG icon is coloured and the program is accepting updates ( I presume you are undating from within the program and not from a site that has 'updates' on it ?) that you are covered and do not need to change ; meanwhile I will see how my 'test' machine behaves.....

For the first time ever I have now seen the nag screan to update to AVG 8.5; this is of course NOT compatible with Windows 98se machines

I re-loaded AVG 7.5 antivirus on my test machine and did manage to update it to 15/5/2009; then it ceases and I now get this nag-screan telling me I am running unprotected .





I intend to continue to explore this via the updater in the program to see IF any further updates will be forthcoming ; that computer is currently running with definitions dated 15/5/2009.........
