I just updated my virus definitions, and here's what my emails say at the bottom:

No virus found in this incoming message.
Checked by AVG.
Version: 7.5.524 / Virus Database: 270.9.13/1825 - Release Date: 12/2/2008 8:44 PM

Seems to be okay, right?

As you can see, I'm still running 7.5.524. I didn't do the update to 7.5.548 because the AVG Forum stated that the update was to help with "upgrading to 8.0". The newest update to 7.5.552, the AVG Free forum states:

http://freeforum.avg.com/read.php?1,90206,backpage=,sv=
QUOTE
The latest update includes :-

FIXES & IMPROVEMENTS
=================
- Improved support for OS system files security.

What does this mean? Do I really need to update my program? I seem to be fine running 7.5.524 as far as I can tell...

Any thoughts?

assuming your AVG 7.5 system tray icon is still coloured(?)I guess you are covered, but MY view is you are running on NOT up to date definitions , therefore debatable as to are you actually fully covered?
and just to throw another spanner in the works whistling.gif looks as though the Pro version is for the chop too

AVG 7.5 Free is still definitely being updated [free.avg.com]. As to when this will cease we don't know. At this stage all we can assume is that the Free updates are perhaps continuing until 31st Dec 08 when the Pro (paid for) version updates are supposed to end according to the Announcement post.
(although at present I cannot locate that Pro announcement post )

Why do you say my definitions are not up-to-date? What are you basing this on?

I just updated right now, and here's what my emails say at the bottom (which coincides with what the program says):

Version: 7.5.524 / Virus Database: 270.9.15/1833 - Release Date: 12/5/2008 7:08 PM

So at this point, my virus definitions are actually more up-to-date than the ones you last posted, correct?

The only difference is that my program version is still at 7.5.524.

7.5.548 update (according to the AVG Free Forum) was for "preparation to upgrade to AVG Free 8.0" (which we all agree makes no sense).

7.5.552 update (according to the AVG Free Forum) is for "Improved support for OS system files security." (I have no idea what that means...)

So why do you think my definitions are not up-to-date?

I may just update for the heck of it though... wacko.gif

I see what you're saying, but I don't think that's correct. The process still works. It's just an "older" version, right? The only way that you'll go out of date with your definitions according to the quote you posted above is if you block or remove the process. I have done neither. The process still works (otherwise I wouldn't be able to download definition updates, which I still am, as I've demonstrated).

Right now, I'm at:

QUOTE

Our virus database is exactly the same.

Also, the program update is over 10 Megs! That's HUGE, don't you think? And that's about the size it was for the update to 7.5.548, which, again, the forum stated was for "preparation to upgrade to 8.0" -- so to me it sounds like of that 10 megs, 95% of it is for stuff that makes n sense. I've never had an AVG program update that's 10megs before. Seems weird...

Also note, the program update is a Recommended Update, not a critical update:

http://free.avg.com/download-update-7#tba2
QUOTE
The recommended update section offers updates containing program changes, fixes and improvements that are not critical for your AVG functionality but will enhance the program behavior.

Windows: 7.5.552 All necessary modules November 25, 2008 9.8 MB

The CRITICAL program update is only to Version 7.5.486, which I am already further above:

http://free.avg.com/download-update-7#tba1
QUOTE
The priority update section includes the latest virus database updates and/or program updates crucial for your AVG proper functioning. To secure the maximum protection, always download the latest priority update as soon as it is available!

Windows: 7.5.486 Additional module: setup. September 13, 2007 636.8 kB

See what I mean...? Thoughts?

Got this from AVG's web site.

Full support for all paid AVG 7.5 products will be provided until April 30, 2009. This support covers all* home and SMB/enterprise solutions, and includes all updates and 24/7 technical and sales support.

*Except AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, for which support will end on December 31, 2008. I assume the free version will not be supported.

Here is the link.

@bloomcountythe plot thickens

http://www.avg.com/faq.num-457#faq_457

java script: faqshow(1462,9);
QUOTE
There is new function “Upgrade Tool” available in latest versions of AVG 7.5 .
This tool is available in several places, but the most visible are new buttons "Upgrade to AVG 8.0" in AVG Control Center and AVG Test Center.

This tool helps you to upgrade your AVG 7.5 to version 8.0 that offers even better protection, as well as many new features and enhanced performance. The conversion process is divided into several simple steps.

QUOTE
Please note
AVG Upgrader will not be displayed to all AVG 7.5 users at the same time.
It will be activated within each AVG 7.5 installation via several consecutive program updates.
This is to optimize the license server traffic during the process of mass conversion from AVG 7.5 to AVG 8.0.

In case "Upgrade to AVG 8.0" button is not available in your AVG 7.5 you can wait until some of the next program update will allow this button, or you can upgrade manually following the instructions described in the FAQ# 1148.

BUT

QUOTE
Platforms supporting AVG Upgrade Tool
AVG Upgrade Tool is supported by the following operating systems:

Windows 2000 Professional (with the latest Service Pack)
Windows XP (Home and Professional editions, both with Service Pack 2)
Windows Vista (all editions)
that are not under the Remote Control.

I take THAT to mean that if you are on XP you WILL see the 'update' but if the comp is 98se you will NOT see the update

if you keep scrolling down that page you will see more info

HOWEVER I still say I am of the view that avg 7.5 needs to be uninstralled prior to installing avg 8.0; BUT that is really NOT the purpose of this thread wacko.gif

Boy, am I glad I didn't install that Recommended Update then! I think I can do without that "update to 8.0" button everywhere stuff. smile.gif

I'll stick with the version I'm running, with which I can still update my virus definitions (as described above).

Thanks for the info!

I think I'll avoid this program "upgrade" like the last one, as it's for upgrading 7.5 to 8.0 (which you're not supposed to do anyways, you're supposed to uninstall completely and then install 8.0). I'm still running 7.5 Free 7.5.524.

I guess this does not include the free AVG antivirus 7.5 which many of us are still running?
