Can you be sure to post back (or PM me) if/when you are asked to do a reboot after a virus definition update? (Or if, after a week or so, this never happens, can you also post or let me know?) I think this info will be useful to those still sticking with 7.5.

Thanks!

I will post back with this news so we can all see it ,but so far, even with a BIG update for me last week and a fairly large one the other day I have NOT had to do a reboot for the definitions to take effect

Most of us on this thread are sticking with 7.5 until they stop supporting that with definition updates (which they haven't yet). At that time, many of us may install 8.0.

some of us on this thread cannot run avg8.0 and do not choose to do so either on our other computers

The avg7.5 definitions continue to be available via the program updater....(hopefully well into the New Year )

I'm still getting the definition updates as well. I chose not to install the program update, because according to the AVG Free forum, it's merely to prepare 7.5 for update to 8.0 (which makes no sense, since you're supposed to uninstall 7.5 before installing 8.0, not update 7.5 *to* 8.0). So my thought was that they were adding something in that would stop the program from working after a certain date. But maybe that's far-fetched. Either way, if they're not going to say what the benefit of the program update is, I don't see any point in installing it. So I'm still running 7.5.524.

Thoughts?

AVG 8.0 is a completley different program from AVG7.5

my personal view is; while AVG 7.5 is still updating and protecting my computer to my satisfaction (which it is) I see no reason to change

for those ON AVG 7.5 it is still updating and so far has required NO reboot with any of the updates thumbup2.gif

I'm still running 7.5.524 -- have chosen not to update the program to 7.5.52 because the AVG Free message board does not yet state what the update was for:

http://freeforum.avg.com/read.php?1,90206,backpage=,sv=

For the last update (to 7.5.48), it said it was in preparation for upgrade to 8.0 (which makes no sense, since you'd never update 7.5 to 8.0).

I'll wait for them to post what the update is actually for before updating the program itself. I am still able to get definition updates.

again AVG 8.0 is a COMPLETELY different package from/to AVG 7.5 and is a similar package to Norton

AVG7.5 will need to be uninstalled if you do take on AVG 8.0

I suggest you need to check your Task tray icon and see if it is still coloured? If you do NOT keep up with the definitions it will . I suggest, turn black and you will NOT have current protection; however, that choice is yours.

my current specifications after another update to day are

I think we're having a mis-communication! smile.gif

I realize/know 100% that AVG 8.0 is a completely different program. That is my point exactly! Why would there be a new PROGRAM UPDATE for 7.5 that says it's for "preparation to update to 8.0" -- ??? It doesn't make sense. That's why I have not installed the last two program updates for 7.5. I will wait to see what they post on the forum that this new update is for. If it's also stated as being for "preparation to upgrade to 8.0" or whatever, than I won't do that one either (unless I'm missing program functionality, which I'll check as you suggested by emailing myself -- though I've noticed that all my emails still have the usual "checked by AVG" message at the bottom).

I am still downloading virus definitions with no problem, my systray icon is not grayed-out -- it's in color and the program says it is functioning and updated at Version 7.5.524.

I will check my email to see that it's working properly and post back my results.

Hope that all makes sense now. Let me know if there is still confusion. smile.gif

Yes. I updated this afternoon and mine is the same.

I'd also like to see a screen shot of the message saying "preparation to update to 8.0"
So far I've NEVER seen this message.

If you read my earlier posts, I provided a link to their message board up in Post #52. I never said the program said this. I said their website forum said this.

However, since the program has since changed again since I posted that link, they've changed the message on the forum, and as you can see, it now says "details to follow". For the previous update, it said at that link that it was in preparation for upgrade to 8.0.

Get what I'm saying...?

news from the AVG forum I thought we avg 7.5 users just might be 'interested 'to read ;updates 'extended' whistling.gif

http://freeforum.avg.com/read.php?1,136697,backpage=,sv=

and , if you even MORE 'interested? have a read of
FAQ 1250
http://free.avg.com/faq.num-1250#faq_1250

and also read this which tells you which platforms are NOT supported by AVG 8.0
http://free.avg.com/faq.num-1304#faq_1304

I do note it says
QUOTE
You can upgrade your AVG 7.5 product (for more details see FAQ 1250 - [free.avg.com]) at any time to benefit from the advanced, proactive protection of AVG 8.0 Free.

but it does need to be remembered that it is actually a DIFFERENT program and NOT an 'upgrade' per ce as they seem to choose to call it

I've just found this......
Update:
Support for AVG 7.5 Free will be provided until February 28, 2009.

You can upgrade your AVG 7.5 product (for more details see FAQ 1250 - [free.avg.com]) at any time to benefit from the advanced, proactive protection of AVG 8.0 Free.

Note: AVG 8.0 supports only Windows 2000/XP/Vista (both x86 and x64 platforms).

This is proberbly because many people have probs with the 8.0 version. The end support date has been extended several times by Grisoft.......

Hope yet to sort out the probs!!!
