to clarify

as from today( 6/7/2008) AVG Free antivirus 7.5 program is on Internal virus database version 270.4.5/1537 (released 6/7/2008)

you may wish to compare your version with this data?
and said antivirus program is still updating virtually daily with no problems

to further clarify; we are at present on avg antivirus FREE 7.5 version 7.5.526 with internal database as quoted above

First, just to clarify -- I was saying that AVG AntiSPYWARE 7.5 Free was apparently no longer being updated. My program no longer connects to the AVG server to update when I run check for updates. AntiVIRUS 7.5 free is still updating, as we both said.

Second, concerning program versions and virus database versions -- As of today, my virus database is at 270.4.6./1538 (having just updated). So we're on the same page there. However, my PROGRAM VERSION is 7.5.524 *not* 7.5.526. As I stated in that link to my other thread I provided above, when the RECOMMENDED PROGRAM UPDATE (not a PRIORITY update) that came up about a week or so ago to update to 7.5.526 (I believe it had something to do with a banner ad and something else), I did not update but waited to try to find out what the update was for. When I went back after the weekend to update, the RECOMMENDED PROGRAM UPDATE to 7.5.526 was no longer available (though another virus database update was available). So it couldn't have been up there that long (maybe a few days at most).

So I am currently running 7.5.524 (as, I'm guessing, are others who didn't happen to do the program update in that short window of opportunity). I have no idea why they only offered that update for a short period of time and are no longer offering it or what it actually contained.

Any thoughts?

(And any CAPS above are not for yelling for merely for stressing/clarification! smile.gif )

I update the same exact way. I just updated again this morning and am at:

Virus Database 270.4.6/1540

Program Version 7.5.524

So, as I was saying, the *recommended program update* to 7.5.526 was only available through the AVG updater in the program for a few days and then no longer showed up. That's the point I'm trying to get some discussion/comments going on. smile.gif Why is it no longer available? And was it even important to any degree? Etc.... Thanks!

In addition, looks like the final date for the FREE 7.5 A/V has been moved up unfortunately:

QUOTE
Support for AVG 7.5 Free Edition is planned to end on 31st August 2008.

No more virus updates are planned for after that date.

Note that no more 'program' updates are due! Only virus updates will continue until the end date.

AVG 7.5 Paid version will be supported until 31/12/08.

So what's the new program update for 7.5 for?

Recommended Update:
AVG Free Control Center (version: 545)
AVG Free User Interface (version: 549)
AVG Free Edition Virus Vault (version: 548)
AVG Free Edition Test Center (version: 548)
AVG Free kernel (version: 542)
Localisation English (version: 549)
Update component (version: 541)

Optional Update:
Same as above plus:
AVG Free help English (version: 548)
Setup component (version: 533)

I chose only to install the virus definition update.

Is this an actual program update to 7.5 Free?! Or are they trying to sneak in a program update to 8.0? (If that's the case, isn't that pretty bad, since you really need to uninstall 7.5 before installing 8.0.)

Thoughts?

I'm considering holding off on this...

See my thread here and the issues that someone else has run into with this update:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic174941.html

...and then see this thread at AVG Free Forum about the same issue:

http://freeforum.avg.com/read.php?1,148380...1,backpage=,sv=

Are you having this issue? Is it now asking you to restart after a virus database update? (If it's not doing that yet, see if it does over the next few days.)

Do you have any idea what the updates are for? I know it's for the "program", but there is no documentation on the AVG website stating what the updates are for (which is kind of lame).

Please let me know your situation with this issue -- thanks!

Either your AVG is corrupted or your Windows is corrupted if the problem is still happening

note the OS in question is Win 2000
I have all green ticks in my Control Pannel OF AVG
Mine with avg7.5 is Win 98se; so far I have rebooted and taken on two more updates with NO reboots required

As the thread suggests , perhaps a reinstallation OF AVG is required; I have MY avg exe saved just incase; do you? ( Although when /if avg stops updating the dreaded change to another av has to happen ; but that is not the purpose of THIS thread but to keep abreast of and share news of the AVG7.5 ???stop date )

Can you be sure to post back (or PM me) if/when you are asked to do a reboot after a virus definition update? (Or if, after a week or so, this never happens, can you also post or let me know?) I think this info will be useful to those still sticking with 7.5.

Thanks!

Thanks for the post. I think we're all aware that AVG 8.0 Free is available for download (it has been for some time). Most of us on this thread are sticking with 7.5 until they stop supporting that with definition updates (which they haven't yet). At that time, many of us may install 8.0. smile.gif
