QUOTE(SoakGame101 @ Jul 18 2008, 04:35 PM) *
I've read most of the articles you have all posted, I have norton internet security 2006 and also the live update from symatec installed on my pc and the virus protection has expired, so i would like to remove all the norton software and install a new AV. But what steps do i actually need to take to complete this without damaging anything else. Do you have to backup the registry? And also what files need to be protected when using the removal tool. If someone could break this down for me i would be very thankful.

Also does anyone use avast antivirus 4.8 or know if its any good?

I disconected from the internet and switched off my resident spyware and all other applications that i could, then ran the removal tool. ALWAYS back up the registry before editing it (i do it twice a week using a cd-rw just in case, takes 5 mins) i never protected any files but i had a recent back up to fall back on. Im now reinstalling internet security 2008 after using- AVG 8 paid version and Comodo pro freeware firewall. I found AVG just as system hungary as norton it slowed my pc down even more (with only 1GB of RAM i cant afford a bloated security system which doesnt even have a firewall ! . Comodo and Zonealarm (tried both) its easier training a blind 6 week old puppy....lol hysterical.gif

I recommend Avast! 4.8 over AVG, a friend of mine has used avg, after he was complaining he was having weird files appearing and the computer acting slow i came over and installed avast, he had over 1000 trojan horses found and automatically moved to chest by the avast boot scanner, are you sure you still want to keep avg now?, avast is free and much better than norton and avg and is based on the kaspersky engine i have heard, it updates daily automatically without interfering with anything and it has the ability to prevent viruses reaching your pc through P2P programs and web browsers before they complete downloading, with the web browser guard it stops them before they even open the dialog box asking to save.

Hi everyone!
I have a problem with my laptop. I have pop-ups on my screen 'Symantec Email Proxy' saying my e-mails can not be sent etc. 5-10 times every minute. It looks like virus and smth to do with Norton.
Does anyone know how to fix it?
I run couple anti-virus programs and turned Norton off, but it didn't help and they still appear.

Thank you in advance for advice. thumbup.gif

Er...does this also apply if I use a modified version (e.g. adding the company name in the program) of NIS 2007 provided by my ISP?

I hate Norton. It let a trojan turn my Windows 98 pc into a zombie, despite doing updates weekly. My ISP told me, otherwise I wouldn't have known. My brother told me about System Suite which is what I put on my Windows 98 PC. It sure was a hard job removing all of the Norton crap. At the time, I started out with add and remove, then after installing SS 6, I was able to use it to remove the rest of Norton. It was like Norton went on forever, and wouldn't leave. Later, when i got my newer PC, the first thing I did was disable Norton, then I deleated it. After removing Norton, then I installed SS.

I'm gotten a kick out of reading some of the comments on this thread about exorcising norton. Funny, funny.

Hi there! I have to first of all say that I love this website! thumbup.gif
I have a question about Norton Internet security. Mine has now expired but I have all my logins in the Identity safe. Is there any way to find this information on my computer?

So I've done all the steps to removing Norton 2003 from my computer but when I press Crtl+Alt+Delete I can still see it (I think) in the Processes tab.

Check my pic.

Please let me know what's up, as I want to install Avast or something soon.

Thanks.

Hi, I have windows xp 2002, sp3, so does that mean that my firewall is by "Symantic"? If so, I really need to use something else cause it is not doing a very good job. I found some files all through my pc with "symantic". Right now I use Avast, it never has found anything, also use MBAM, nothing either, yet I know I am infected with something that is driving me crazy.
My question is about my firewall, would this be symantic? Does anyone know?

I've also used a program before called Easy Cleaner 2.0 by ToniArts to remove Norton products.

Just be very careful because you can also screw things up using other aspects of this program in different areas. I learned from experience. It wasn't the programs fault, it was the inexperienced user using the program!

It has been very successful removing things through the programs version of add/remove.
