File Description:
Shimgvw.bat is a tool that will unregister or register the shimgvw.dll file. This file is the Windows Picture and Fax viewer. When you unregister this file, images will no longer be able to open using the WIndows Picture and Fax viewer. This tool was created to help mitigate the possible infection of a Windows computer by specially crafted Windows MetaFiles as per the technote found here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/advisory/912840.mspx.
It is advised that you download this batch file to your desktop, extract it, and double-click on shimgvw.bat. Then choose option 1 to unregister the dll. Now if you visit a web site that contains a specially crafted WMF file, you will not be exploited. Once a patch is released, you simply have to run the batch file again, but this time choose option 2 to register the DLL and therefore allow the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer to work again.
